Miss Representation

The University of Utah National Association of Women Business Owners Salt Lake Chapter (NAWBO-SLC) Smart Women in Marketing networking group (SWIM) presents a free screening of the documentary: Miss Representation The documentary by Jennifer Siebel Newsom premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and aired on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.  The film explores how the media’s misrepresentations of women have led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. SLCC staffers had a great day at the Capitol for the SLCC Staff Association & Center for Innovation Utah Higher Education Staff Association Day on Feb 16. Staffers learned about the political process, met with legislators, took a tour of the Capitol, and enjoyed lunch in the Capitol Cafeteria run by SLCC students. NJCAA Region 18 Basketball Tournament

NJCAA Region 18 Basketball playoffs will be played at Salt Lake Community College are March 8-10. Games will be played in the Lifetime Activities Center at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus (4600 S Redwood Rd, Salt Lake City, UT). David Oshinsky Lecture

David Oshinsky Lecture: March 7th Oak Room, Student Center, Taylorsville- Redwood Campus Noon-1:30pm Include Panel Discussion with Facualty from Humanities department. Free admission Biography: David Oshinsky holds the Jack S. Blanton Chair in History at The University of Texas at Austin and is a Distinguished Scholar in Residence at New York University. He graduated from Cornell in 1965 and obtained his PhD from Brandeis University in 1971. His books include “A Conspiracy So Immense: The World of Joe McCarthy,” which won the Hardeman Prize for the best book about the U.S. Congress and was a New York Times “notable book of the year;” “Worse Than Slavery,” which won the Robert Kennedy Book Award for its “distinguished contribution to human rights” and was also a New York Times “notable book of the year;” and “Polio: An American Story,” which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2006. SLCC Appreciation Night at the Grand

All SLCC faculty and staff are invited to a free night of theater on March 7. Joseph McCarthy scholar David Oshinsky will be in the Grand Theatre from 6-7 p.m. discussing Senator McCarthy, his actions, and the politician's  influence on playwright Arthur Miller. The performance of “The Crucible” will begin at 7:30, following the discussion. SLCC employees are encouraged to attend both events. SLCC employees can each receive two tickets to the show. The box office will be open before the performance. Tickets are reserved. You must show your One Card at the box office to pick up your tickets. Visit the Grand Theatre box office (12-5, M-F) or 801.957.3322 for reservations. Tickets are reserved. The offer for free tickets is not transferable to another performance.

Arun Gandhi Visit

Arun Gandhi, the grandson of the legendary peace-maker and spiritual leader, Mohandas K. Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, will be coming to the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) as part of National Interfaith Month on February 29, 2012. Arun will be speaking at the SLCC Taylorsville/Redwood Campus in the Markosian Library on the Second Floor at 12:00p.m. He will be discussing the belief of Nonviolence and how that can relate to greater interfaith dialogue. He will also be presenting this lecture in conjunction with the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable at the Salt Lake City Public Library’s Main Branch at 7:00pm. 2012 Volunteer Management Training Series In partnership with the Utah Commission on Volunteers, the United Way of Salt Lake and the Thayne Center for Service & Learning at Salt Lake Community College are excited to offer a FREE volunteer management training series to all nonprofit community partner organizations. Fulbright Scholar Dr. Baohua Wang

Salt Lake Community College's first-ever Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Baohua Wang, was introduced on the floor of the Utah State Senate and Utah House of Representatives today, February 16, 2012. Dr. Wang currently teaches at the Chinese Capital Medical University in Beijing. A graduate of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and the China Academy of Medical Science, his research focuses on the classic theory of acupuncture. Dr. Wang will provide lectures and seminars on the theory and application of Chinese medicine. With experience teaching acupuncture not only to Chinese students but also to international students from countries such as India, Pakistan, Canada and South Africa, Dr. Wang also published a book in 2009 about Traditional Chinese Medicine aimed at the Chinese population. During his visit to the United States, Dr. Wang will be providing lectures and seminars on the topic of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and in particular, its theory and appl
