SLCC Graduate has No Fear of Flying

Ramsay Campbell has no fear of flying. He loves it. He graduated from Salt Lake Community College as its graduate of excellence from the School of Technical Specialties. When asked how his summer after graduation is going, U.S. Veteran Campbell said, “I’m doing a whole lot of helicopter flying.” “I’ve flown 76 hours in my first 90 days working since graduating,” he said. “I’ve had 424 landings with my clients in that time.” That alone would be enough to test the nerves of many Americans. But there's more. Campbell is doing his flying as a helicopter instructor. Teaching other people how to fly. Some of whom, when they get in the helicopter with him, it's for the first time. There's an old adage, flying's easy, it's the landing that's tough. But for Campbell, neither caused as much anxiety as getting a job after graduation. Fortunately, he landed a job with Upper Limit Aviation right after graduation. Teaching had always been in his long-range plans, b

The Salt Lake City Public Library and the SLCC Community Writing Center will offer a writing mentoring program for local teens this year, from September 2012 - May 2013. Salt Lake Teens Write connects underserved teens with volunteer mentors who use writing in their daily lives and professions. Together, student and mentor explore how writing opens different pathways to education and successful careers. Mentoring teams meet for 1-2 hours a week and work together to produce a portfolio of writing based on the teen's interests. They also attend quarterly writing workshops with the other mentoring teams. At year's end, all mentoring teams collaborate on an anthology publication and public reading to celebrate the year's creations. SLCC L-3 University of Manufacturing

Salt Lake Community College and L-3 Corporation recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of the ‘Man U’ project. A special event in recognition of the collaboration between the company and the College was held at the new Westpointe Center on July 11. SLCC developed curriculum and provided training facilities and instructors for the ‘L-3 University of Manufacturing’. Working with L-3, the College tailored the electronics technician program it already had to meet L-3’s specific training needs. The 8-week program is for assemblers and test personnel to advance in their careers. The idea for L-3’s ‘Man-U’ came about in early 2011 when L-3 Vice President of Operations Stephen Eiting thought there had to be a better way to train L-3 employees and fill the many job openings at the company. At the time, L-3 found it easier to fill electrical engineering positions than assembly positions.       L-3 Communications hired 700 people in 2010, nearly 400 in 2011, and Eiting
