SLCC Student Built Habitat for Humanity Home receives highest 'Green' rating

Park City home gets LEED Platinum Certification The newest home completed in Park City, Utah by Habitat for Humanity of Summit and Wasatch Counties has been awarded LEED Platinum Certification. The US Green Building Council (USGBC) presented the homeowner and Habitat and the homeowner with a plaque certifying the platinum recognition. "This is only the third LEED Platinum residential project in the State of Utah,” said Alan Agle, Green Homes Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity. “It [is] a significant milestone for Habitat, Park City, and the State as a whole." Students from Salt Lake Community College’s building and construction program volunteered their time and expertise to help Habitat for Humanity build a home loaded with sustainable ‘green’ features in Park City. SLCC Culinary Arts Program Receives ACFEF Seven-Year Accreditation

Salt Lake Community College offers an apprenticeship-based Culinary Arts program.  For more than 25 years, SLCC’s Culinary Institute has prepared students for culinary careers that prepares students for the business side of the industry as much as its culinary aspects. SLCC Receives $825,000 Department of Labor Grant

Salt Lake Community College has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative. The College will receive $825,000 over the course of the four-year grant to develop training programs that teach people how to make medical devices. “The medical device industry is already strong in Utah, and it continues to grow,” SLCC Biomanufacturing Program Director Vivian Ngan-Winward said. “But there’s not much training to specifically support the needs of that industry or related industries in the life sciences generally. This grant will allow the College to improve education and provide talent development in those areas.” SLCC will work closely with industry partners to develop curriculum for training in the medical device industry. The College will then be the pilot institution—along with other institutions in the North Carolina’s Forsyth Technical Community College Consortium–to provide course work

SLCC Holds D.C. Intern Program Information Sessions

Salt Lake Community College has a program to help students obtain internships in Washington D.C. The College is currently accepting applications for the program for the Summer 2013 semester. Information meetings will be held at the College’s Taylorsville Redwood Campus in the Student Center, in room 217 on the following dates: Tuesday, October 2 at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 15 at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 25 at 12:30 p.m. The internships give students opportunities to learn on the job, engage with national business people, add important skills, and enhance their resumes in ways they couldn’t do any other way. Internships generally last one semester. Applicants get to select their own area of interest. Students can pursue internships in areas as diverse as politics, the FBI, art, aeronautics, or any other option that offers an internship in the Washington D.C. area. The Miller Business Resource Center (MBRC) at Salt Lake Community College is hosting a two-session workshop for aspiring entrepreneurs on October 2 and 9, 2012 from 6:00 p.m.- to 9:00 p.m.  The workshop will be geared to those interested in starting a business and will cover venture capitalist and author Paul Ahlstrom’s Nail It Then Scale It (NISI) business model. The NISI model incorporates leading-edge startup practices and prepares entrepreneurs for greater success.  The training offers the methods and practices contained in the book, Nail It Then Scale It, which helps business owners identify and validate what customers actually want, before spending valuable time and resources.  Participants will also learn how to implement principles of a ‘lean’ startup, using practical tools exclusive to the program. SLCC Offers Eight-Week Session

Salt Lake Community College is offering an eight-week session Fall 2012 semester. The session will allow students to take general education courses. Core classes in math, chemistry, biology, history and other academic areas will be offered. Elective courses will also be offered across a range of disciplines. The eight-week session allows students to complete the courses essential to finishing their degree programs. Many of these classes, such as Math 1010 or Chemistry 1010, operate at capacity during the regular fall, spring, and summer semesters. SLCC Athletic Director Norma Carr Wins YWCA Outstanding Achievement Award

Salt Lake Community College Athletics Director Norma Carr will be presented with the YWCA outstanding achievement award at the YWCA’s 24th Annual Leader Luncheon. Norma Carr will be recognized for her leadership and the pioneering role she has had in providing Utah’s women and girls with athletic and academic opportunities. Prior to becoming the first and only woman in Utah’s history to serve as athletic director for both men and women’s programs, Carr graduated from Brigham Young University as a five-sport athlete from BYU in 1969 and went on to receive her Master’s Degree at the University of Utah. In her role as SLCC Athletic Director, Carr oversaw the construction of the Lifetime Activities Center and Bruin Arena, Cate Field and the College’s softball diamond. Carr was instrumental in bringing women's varsity athletics at the University of Utah, and was the school's first head coach in both softball and volleyball. She has received extraordinary professional recognition

SLCC Offers Medical Coding Degree

Salt Lake Community College now offers a degree in Medical Coding . Medical Coding is an essential component of the health care industry, expected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor to be one of the most in-demand professions over the next 10 years. Medical Coding requires workers to be responsible for documenting the services provided every time a patient receives professional health care in a physician’s office, hospital outpatient facility or surgical center. SLCC Medical Coding student Abby Howell was already working in the industry when she decided to enroll in the program. She was interested in pursuing a degree because it would provide job security, and helps to prepare her for the national coding exam, which provides even more job security. Her employer paid for her to go to school, and Howell is taking advantage of the opportunity. “The program has been great,” Howell said. “It has been very helpful to me, especially because I’m already working in the industry. Department of Labor Grant Provides SLCC Scholarships for Digital Arts Fields

Salt Lake Community College has scholarships available that provide opportunities for people to train for careers in the creative field of digital arts. Because of funding through a  Community-Based Job Training  (CBJT) grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, SLCC is able to provide students with free tuition and many fees for programs in digital arts fields. The SLCC Community-Based Job Training (CBJT) Digital Arts grant provides comprehensive training, job placement and retention services targeting technical skills and competencies to meet the workforce demands in the high-growth digital arts industry. These programs provide training for jobs currently available or job openings that are anticipated during the life of grant, and create pathways to stackable credentials that result in career advancement and wage growth. Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program: Additional Information Session and Application Workshops

The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses (GS 10KSB) program at Salt Lake Community College invites eligible business owners to attend an information session about the business management program, which launches January 11, 2013.  Business owners who would like to apply for the GS 10KSB program are also invited to attend an application workshop.  Applications for the program are currently being accepted. SLCC's MaCauley Flint Receives Collegiate Athlete of the Year Honor

SLCC standout pitcher MaCauley Flint was honored by the Utah-Southern Idaho Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as the Utah Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year. Flint, a Roy, UT native, will be presented the honor at the 34th annual Dinner of Champions. She is the first Bruin to receive this accolade. “I knew that the coaching staff had nominated me for an award, but I had no idea how big it was,” said Flint. “This is the most humbling experience—it’s so great to see softball take me to where it has. I’m very blessed to be the one that they chose because there are so many amazing athletes.” Flint has been a standout player for SLCC and is highly regarded by her coaches and teammates as a humble and charitable leader that sets a positive example. Salt Lake Community College hosted David Bergeron, acting assistant secretary for the Office of Postsecondary Education, on Friday, Sept.14 as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s third annual back-to-school bus tour. David Bergeron SLCC held separate events at two campuses with Bergeron. He met with veterans at the College’s Westpointe Center campus to hear first-hand their concerns, issues and needs in terms of entering, persisting and finishing postsecondary education. At the first event focused on veterans' services, Bergeron heard from students, faculty, and administrators about the issues facing veterans in higher education. He thanked the College's students and personnel for their feedback, saying that it allows the Department of Education to better perform its role. Interpreter Honored for Helping Deaf Students

From the Jordan School District School Stories, September 6, 2012: [Former Salt Lake Community College student] Ryan Brown is humble and quiet by nature, but put him to work in a classroom and his personality and love for the job come alive. Ryan plays a special role in Jordan School District as one of seven interpreters for deaf students. This year he is assigned to a seventh grade student at South Hills Middle. That’s where you can see Ryan’s passion for helping deaf children learn, love education and embrace the classroom and classmates. Ryan is exceptional in his professionalism, service to students and in his attitude. SLCC Radiologic Tech Students are Perfect: 100% Pass National Board Exams

Each student enrolled in Salt Lake Community College’s Radiologic Technology Class of 2012 has passed the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) National Board Exam. The program has a total of 39 students, all of whom successfully completed the qualifying exam that is the national standard used by employers, state licensing agencies, and federal regulators to indicate a person has met a recognized national standard for medical imaging, interventional procedures, and radiation therapy professionals. “It is outstanding—and we are obviously pleased—that all of our students were successful in passing this exam,” said SLCC radiologic technology program coordinator David Neil. “This result lets us know that the work we are doing here is working. Taylorsville City Gets a New Look in Time for Fall Semester

Taylorsville City has a new logo for the first time since the community became incorporated as a city a dozen years ago.  The new logo design has a distinctly collegiate look and feel to reflect the city’s largest institution, Salt Lake Community College. SLCC’s main campus—located in Taylorsville city—employs more than 1,000 full time employees and is home to more than 17,000 students. “We love having Salt Lake Community College in our city,” Taylorsville City Mayor Russ Wall said. “The College is a great asset to our city and this community.” The design uses a blue and tan color scheme that is similar to SLCC’s, and uses the letter ‘T’ superimposed over the letter ‘C’ in a font and style that harks back to an old version of the College’s when it was called Utah Technical College.  Taylorsville’s new logo replaces a previous logo that was shaped like a wagon-wheel symbol.
