SLCC Ragnar 2013

Congrats to the SLCC Ragnar Wasatch Back Relay team! String Audition Boot Camp 2013

Salt Lake Community College Division of Communication and Performing Arts and Division of Continuing Education Present String Audition Boot Camp 2-Day Intensive Summer Workshop with Dr. Leslie Henrie This workshop is designed for talented high school students who wish to gain knowledge and exposure to audition procedures, learn audition preparation skills, participate in mock auditions, and receive advice on audition repertoire. Students will also learn about available scholarship opportunities from schools both local and national and make a digital recording of audition material. Space is limited. 2013 SLCC Summer Science Workshops

SLCC Summer Science Workshops Participants will have four days of fun learning experiences working with robotics, civil engineering, math, physics and more. Snacks will be provided…but we ask that parents send a packed lunch. Parents even get in on the fun: parent day will be on the Thursday of each camp. From noon – 2:30 p.m. all campers’ parents are invited to see what their  children  SLCC scientists accomplished. Lunch will be included. Auditions for Fame at The Grand Theatre

The Grand Theatre will be holding auditions for  Fame  on Friday, June 21, 2013 from 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. The Grand Theatre is located at 1575 South State Street, Salt Lake City. Auditions will be held in the Annex Building, located in the South-east corner of the parking lot at 1610 South State Street, east of Salt Lake Community College’s South City Campus. Dave Hanson will be directing the production, which will run October 10-26, 2013 at the Grand Theatre. Rehearsals will begin in August. Those interested in auditioning for the play can call the Grand Theatre box office at (801) 957-3322 to schedule an audition time. Each actor will be scheduled in 5-minute blocks and should select 16 bars of a Musical Theatre piece and a short 30-second monologue to perform. Utah Representative Jim Matheson Visits SLCC

Utah representative Jim Matheson recently came to Salt Lake Community College's Taylorsville Redwood Campus to visit with students. The wide-ranging discussion featured many topics, but the majority of the time was spent considering the changes that will soon go into effect because of the changes to the Stafford loan program. Utah Representative Jim Matheson visits with SLCC students. Federally funded Stafford loans are available for low-income students, and currently carry an interest rate of 3.4 percent; that rate is set to double to 6.8 percent on July 1. That would result in more debt and higher payments for students. In 2013, Jim Matheson was elected to a seventh term as the representative for Utah’s Fourth Congressional District, which comprises the western half of Salt Lake County, the northern tip of Utah County and portions of Sanpete and Juab Counties. Nerdapalooza v.1 Technology Tradeshow at Salt Lake Community College

SLCC Hosts AAWCC LEADERS Institute

Salt Lake Community College is the host institution for the 2013 American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) LEADERS Institute. The conference will be held in West Valley City, Utah from June 1-5.    The LEADERS Institute is a content-intensive, experiential workshop, based on a recently revised curriculum reflecting the American Association of Community Colleges (ACCC) Core Competencies for Leadership.  LEADERS Institute promotes the development of leadership skills and qualities at every level in community college administration and education. Each year a class of 20-35 professional women from across the country come together to gain insights to community college leadership through presentations from experts that range from leadership, power and communication to strategic thinking/data driven decisions to managing organizational culture. Over the past 28 years, more than 6,000 women have participated in the LEADERS Institute program.    "LEADERS off

Laura Snider Named SLCC 2013 Graduate of Excellence

Laura Snider is the 2013 Salt Lake Community College Graduate of Excellence from the School of Applied Technology & Professional Development. Snider, from Pleasant Grove, UT, majored in criminal justice and graduates with high honors.  "I thought, ŒI should do something to improve my life so I¹m not stuck in an entry-level position forever." I never thought I¹d do anything like this‹because it¹s playing with dead bodies. But I've loved all my teachers here. Especially Gary Cox. He goes above and beyond to make sure students succeed. Esther Longmore Named SLCC 2013 Graduate of Excellence

Esther Longmore is the 2013 Salt Lake Community College Graduate of Excellence from the School of Arts, Communication, & New Media. Longmore, from Murray, UT, majored in design and graduates with honors.  "I love design. I thrive in it. It¹s been a fun journey," Longmore said. "My favorite instructor, Keri Gonzales, is amazing. She knows her stuff. She¹s been more of a mentor than just an instructor for me. I can go to her with any question I have. This degree will open new doors for me and my education and career." Karen Knewtson Named SLCC 2013 Graduate of Excellence

Karen Knewtson is the 2013 Salt Lake Community College Graduate of Excellence from the School of Technical Specialties. Knewtson, originally from Madelia, MN, majored in Aviation Maintenance and graduates with honors.  "My experience here has been awesome. My professors have all been so helpful, approachable, and nice‹always ready to answer any question," Knewtson said. "And the College has been so supportive. There are so many incentives to do something, to be active in things that advance your career. I got to start a club here and do good things to help people and the administration and everyone have completely supported everything." Julianne Stoddard Keehan Named SLCC 2013 Graduate of Excellence

Julianne Stoddard Keehan is the 2013 Salt Lake Community College Graduate of Excellence from the School of Technical Specialties. Keehan, originally from Salmon, ID, majored in Nursing and graduates with high honors.  "I've always had the desire to be a nurse, but worried I wouldn't be able to do it. My chemistry teacher Paul Lombardi got me excited about chemistry. I mean, who can get you excited about chemistry?" Keehan said. "He made me believe I could succeed and conquer difficult subjects." Sarah Quiroz Named SLCC 2013 Graduate of Excellence

Sarah Quiroz is the 2013 Salt Lake Community College Graduate of Excellence from the School of Humanities & Social Sciences. Quiroz, from Salt Lake City, UT, majored in psychology and graduates with high honors.  "My teachers made psychology come to life, it wasn't just people lying on the couch telling you their problems," Quiroz said. "I plan to continue my education and to get a PhD in developmental and child psychology. I want to use my skills and knowledge to help others be better informed and have their voices heard- especially within the Latino and underprivileged communities." Benjamin Coe Named SLCC 2013 Graduate of Excellence

Benjamin Coe is the 2013 Salt Lake Community College Graduate of Excellence from the School of Business. Coe, originally from Stockton, UT, majored in computer science and information systems and graduates with honors. "College wasn¹t something I had an instant opportunity to do. I always had to pay my own way. When I finally got to school, I was really excited about it. That¹s why I tried so hard,² Coe said. ³My first semester, I got a 3.96‹one A-. I hated that one A-. It drove me crazy. What Randy Koziatek taught me opened up a new path. I found something I was good at. The encouragement I was given was an absolute gift." SLCC's Graduates of Excellence recognize one student from each of the College¹s schools.

Sherri Butler Named SLCC 2013 Graduate of Excellence

Sherri Butler is the 2013 Salt Lake Community College Graduate of Excellence from the School of Science, Mathematics, & Engineering. Butler, originally from San Jose, CA, majored in fitness technician and graduates with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and high honors. “I’ve always enjoyed moving and have been amazed at how our bodies work and what they are capable of doing. I wanted to know why,” Butler said. “My last semester both my husband and oldest son were deployed to Afghanistan. It was a challenge, but I came away from school and those challenges realizing that I am capable of so much.” SLCC’s Graduates of Excellence recognize one student from each of the College’s schools.
