SLCC Opens New Plastics Lab

Salt Lake Community College has opened a new Plastics Lab at its Meadowbrook Campus. A boon to both students and local manufactures in the Plastics Injection Molding industry.  SLCC’s new lab will contain the newest equipment in the industry, including a RoboShot 110-ton Injection Molding Machine that was donated by BD Medical, an objet photo-polymer 3-D Printer, and a steel negative part molddonated by BARD Access Systems. “We depend on industry support in all these areas to make this program a success,” said Mark Poole, SLCC Corporate Solutions director.    “We are very grateful for the high quality of these donations. Cooperation between industry and academia benefits all involved, and all of us at SLCC will work to improve the Plastics Injection Molding workforce and industry.”   With the addition of the Objet 3-D printer and other machining and milling equipment, the Plastic lab now takes products from the concept to the prototype to the production stage. 50th Anniversary MLK Jr's "I Have a Dream" Speech

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s march on Washington, “I Have a Dream” speech, SLCC’s Student Life and Leadership department is broadcasting on the hour, for the second day, at all the campuses, his remarkable speech that took place on the Washington Mall, August 28, 1963. The Black Student Union is sponsoring a time for reflection, in the northwest hall of the  Student Center, where students and other members of the College are encouraged to post their own dreams—whether for themselves or society. Senator Urquhart Named ‘Legislative Champion’ at SLCC Convocation

Salt Lake Community College held its 2013 Convocation on August 20 at the College’s Taylorsville Redwood Campus. Sekou Andrews provided the keynote address andStephen H. Urquhart was named the institution’s ‘Legislative Champion.’ Convocation brings all SLCC faculty, staff, and employees together for the College’s celebration of the new academic year the day before Fall semester classes begin. 2013 Legislative Champion Stephen H. Urquhart is a member of the Utah State Senate, serving as Co-chair of the Higher Education Sub-appropriations Committee. Prior to his election to his current position, he was was a member of the Utah House of Representatives from 2001 to 2008, serving as Majority Whip and Rules Chair.  Born and raised in Houston, Texas he received his a bachelor’s degree in biology from Williams College and his law degree from BYU Law School, where he was a member of Law Review and an honors graduate. SLCC Thanks Larry Hancock, SLCC Trustee 2006-2013

The College thanks Trustee Larry Hancock for his years of dedicated service to SLCC. Larry was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2006, and served an amazing champion for the College since. His last official day as a Trustee was June, 30 2013. He will surely continue to support and advocate for the College and the College will continue to be a part of his and his family’s lives. At the Board of Trustees meeting on August 14, Larry was presented with a plaque in recognition of his service to the College by President Bioteau. He spoke movingly of the connection he has had with SLCC since becoming a Trustee and how much many members of his family have enjoyed learning at the College. Larry brought a professional background to his position on the SLCC Board that includes 25 years of leadership over health systems, health insurance plans, and hospitals to his role on the Board. South Campus Room Numbers: Fall 2013

Dear Students and Faculty: We are excited to announce that the Center for New Media at our South City Campus (1575 S. State Street) has been completed and the Instructional Administration Building at our Taylorsville Redwood Campus (4600 S. Redwood Road) is nearly finished. As a result, we have recently changed a number of room assignments for Fall classes. Please  check your class schedule immediately before coming to class  to make sure that you have the correct building and room number. Classes start on Wednesday, August 21 st ; information tables will be set up in most buildings on Wednesday and Thursday to help you find your class if you are having trouble after you arrive. SLCC Softball Hires New Coaching Staff

Cyndee Bennett Named Head Coach, Tara Bendt Assistant Salt Lake Community College’s Softball team has a new coaching staff. Following three consecutive trips to the NJCAA National Championship game, the College’s softball program has named Cyndee Bennett the new head coach and Tara Bendt her assistant. Bennett had previously worked as an assistant on the Bruin coaching staff for six seasons, her work primarily focused on the SLCC pitching staff. Last season, the Bruin pitchers had a combined earned run average of 1.87 under her direction. In addition to her work with the College, Bennett also teaches at Olympus High School and has been the head coach of Olympus Softball for six years. She also coached at Viewmont High School from 1998-2003. She was named Coach-of-the-Year by the Utah High School Softball Coaches Association in 2002, 2003 and 2010. SLCC Volleyball Awarded AVCA Team Academic Award

Bruins Earn Program’s First AVCA Academic Honor The 2012-2013 SLCC Volleyball team has been given the Academic Team Award by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The honor marks the first time in program history that SLCC Volleyball has received the award. "I am so proud of our Volleyball team players for their commitment to academic and athletic excellence," said SLCC athletic director Norma Carr.  "The traits that make them great on the court—work ethic, intelligence and ambition—translate to the classroom. Everyone in this department at SLCC works to support our athletes, and academic achievement will serve our students well and is what I’m most excited to see.” Students on the Bruin Volleyball team earned a collective grade point average (GPA) of 3.29.  Desiree Bradshaw  and   Maddie Bushman  led the team academically, with both also earning the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement. South City Campus and Grand Theatre

Dean Dr. David Richardson Farewell!

On June 30, 2013 the SLCC Libraries bid farewell to Interim Dean Dr. David Richardson, and a search has been underway for a permanent Director.  On July 1, 2013 Jordan Campus Library Director Jon Glenn was appointed on an acting basis to coordinate the services and operations of the SLCC Libraries, with oversight direction from Associate Provost Dr. Ryan Carstens.  Jon’s new title is Assistant Director of Campus Library Services. Jon Glenn is a familiar face to many at SLCC, having held various library positions at the Taylorsville Redwood, South, and Jordan Campus libraries.  He has also been active serving on the SLCC Staff Association Executive Board, but stepped down to take on his new library responsibilities. Jon holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Utah.
