Banned Books Week: Online Exhibit to Raise Awareness

For Banned Books Week, September 22-28, 2013 SLCC Digital Archives has created an   Online Exhibit  to raise awareness of censorship and to celebrate the freedom to read! Throughout history, some of the most culturally important books have been banned, drawing attention to the important issues they present and, ironically, making them more enticing,  especially to young readers . Books are still being banned or challenged in today’s society. Just last week, a  North Carolina County School Board voted 5-2 to ban Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man,” stating that they found “no literary value” in the work and that it was “too much for teenagers.” “Invisible Man” is one of the most famous pieces of literature about Black life in America in the 1950s and won the National Book Award, so the school board’s assertion that it had no literary merit is, at the very least, questionable. 4th Annual SLCC Chapbook Competition

Fourth Annual SLCC Chapbook Competition 2013 Genre: Fiction SLCC students are invited to submit fiction manuscripts of 4,000-12,000 words by November 22. Submissions may include one or more pieces of fiction and must be within the word limit. Prize: Winning Writer:  $100 honorarium and publication of your manuscript by the Publication Center—you receive 25 copies.  Finalists:  Opportunity to work with Publication Studies students to publish a limited run of your manuscript (10 copies). Eligibility: Any current student at SLCC may submit a manuscript. The work must be the original work of the writer, and must not have been previously published. Details: The winning manuscript will be published in chapbook format and printed in a run of 250 copies; it will be circulated on campus and placed in local bookstores. Banned Books Week: Censorship and Challenged Books

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982. According to the American  Library Association, there were 464 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2012, and many more go unreported.  Check out this website  to read more about frequently challenged books! Banned Books Week: Virtual Read-Outs!

As par t of the annual awareness campaign that draws attention to censorship ALA (American Library Association) has partnered with fellow cosponsors of Banned Books Week to host a Virtual "Read-Out" where readers from around the world will be able to participate! -- Videos are featured on the dedicated  Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out YouTube channel . --  YouTube videos of authors  reading from their favorite banned/challenged book or talking about the importance of the freedom to read are also featured. Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. Check out the frequently challenged books section of the official Banned & Challenged Books Website to explore the issues and controversies around book challenges and book banning. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. To celebrate Banned Books Week, the SLCC Digital Archives has created an interactive exhibit at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus Library which will run from September 23rd into the beginning of October.
