Company pushes ‘reset button’ through program at SLCC

South Mountain Builders Inc. owner Juan Cardenas sees the economic downturn of 2008 as a turning point, after which he pared his general construction company down from over 40 employees to just 3 family members and enrolled in a unique program at Salt Lake Community College. Olympic gold shines on ski company co-owner in program at SLCC

4FRNT Skis co-owner Matt Sterbenz now has an Olympic gold medal and a national program held at Salt Lake Community College to help grow his business. Athlete David Wise, who is also Sterbenz’s business partner, won a gold medal in the ski halfpipe this past week during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. “We have been getting a lot of calls,” said Joshua Moreland, marketing director for 4FRNT. “A number of people calling just to congratulate us. … They were excited about an American company, making skis in America, winning gold medals.” While Wise has been winning in Sochi, Sterbenz has been using the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program at SLCC to hone his skills as a leader and improve the company, which with eight full-time employees designs and manufactures skis. “He’s learning a lot about how to be a better leader,” Moreland said. Barlow Anderson and Jibson to Receive Honorary Degrees at SLCC Commencement

Salt Lake Community College officials named Jesselie Barlow Anderson and Ronald W. Jibson the College’s 2014 Honorary Doctorate recipients. They will receive the awards during the College’s May 8 Commencement Ceremony at the Maverik Center, 3200 South Decker Lake Drive in West Valley City, Utah. Jesselie Barlow Anderson Ronald W. Jibson Barlow Anderson served two full terms from 2005-2013 on the SLCC Board of Trustees, chairing the Board for one term, and was instrumental in establishing the College’s Washington D.C. internship program. SLCC baseball star helps end Olympic speedskating medals drought

Salt Lake Community College shortstop Eddy Alvarez helped the U.S. Speedskating team win silver Friday in the 5,000-meter short track relay. Russia took the gold while China finished third. The U.S. long track team did not win a medal in 12 events, while the short track team had not reached the podium through seven events prior to Friday. The 5,000 was Alvarez’s fifth of five scheduled events during the Olympics. While in Utah he attended Salt Lake Community College and in 2011 walked on to the College’s baseball team as a shortstop, batting an impressive .303 and making the All-Conference team.
