Career Advancement Program (CAP) “Meet the Professionals” Series What is your Dream Career?

If you could talk to and learn skills and abilities from someone who is actually working in your Dream Career, would you do it? The mission of the CAP (Career Advancement Program) lecture series is to establish supportive relationships between professionals and SLCC students. This is to broaden the students’ vision into their future to help them attain their fullest academic, emotional and social potential by creating a firm educational foundation. CAP presenters in the past have been CEOs, Presidents, Business Owners, NBA Coach, Broadcaster, Educator, Accountants, Financial Planners, Graphic Artist, Policeman/Sniper, Lawyer, Marketing, County Mayor, City Mayors, Bankers, Photographers and many other professions.   Each professional who presents at CAP will have a story of overcoming obstacles, as there are many, and how you can progress by conquering them. SLCC Professor Lynn Kilpatrick “In the House” book reading

SLCC English professor Lynn Kilpatrick will be giving a reading from her book, “In the House” at the Hivemind Book Club on January 22. Hivemind is located at 255 S Central Campus Drive Rm 3-171 on the University of Utah campus.  The event begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided in addition to the scintillating conversation. A discussion will follow Kilpatrick’s reading. Kilpatrick’s session of the book club is also sponsored by the SLCC English Department. The book club meeting will be held Thursday January 29 at 7 pm in Room 3-171. There will be treats! “In the House” and Kilpatrick’s other works are available for purchase at SLCC bookstore locations and at The King’s English book shop. Hivemind is a city-wide book club sponsored by the University of Utah Creative Writing Program that meets once a month to discuss a book by visiting writers from the University of Utah Creative Writing Program's Guest Writers Series.

SLCC Picks New VP for “Effectiveness and Planning”

Salt Lake Community College President Deneece G. Huftalin recently chose Barbara Grover as Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning. “Barbara has been instrumental in helping us successfully address accreditation, strategic planning and institutional outcome reporting,” said Dr. Huftalin. “Her position will become increasingly important as we strive collectively to “move the needle” on access, completion, transfer, workforce training and community partnerships.” Barbara Grover Grover has previously served at SLCC as assistant provost for institutional effectiveness and is the accreditation liaison officer for the College. Her experience at SLCC includes Senate Curriculum Committee chair and academic division chair. Nick Burns: Associate Dean of Communication and Performing Arts

It is my great pleasure to announce that Nick Burns has accepted the position Associate Dean of Communication and Performing Arts in the School of Arts, Communication & Media. Nick holds a master of arts degree in interdisciplinary studies from Oregon State University focusing on English, creative writing, and journalism. His career has long been defined by blending academia and media. His teachings include: courses in journalism for print and online; classes in media production, including narrative and documentary video and radio; instruction for software skills including Photoshop and DreamWeaver; courses in film theory and criticism; and literature and composition. SLCC Announces Choice for Newly Created Cabinet Position

Salt Lake Community College President Deneece G. Huftalin recently chose Dr. Roderic Land to act as Special Assistant to the President. “In this new position Dr. Land will focus on inclusivity initiatives, leadership succession training and development, K-16 partnerships, and other strategic initiatives as they evolve at the College,” said Dr. Huftalin. “Dr. Land brings with him a wealth of experience leading community groups and he will be a wonderful addition to the college.” Dr. Roderic Land Dr. Land did all of his postgraduate work at the University of Illinois, where he earned his PhD in Educational Policy, Organization and Leadership. He has committed his “life and work” to higher education. Dr. Land most recently worked in the Salt Lake County Mayor’s office as a special projects coordinator. SLCC receives Carnegie 2015 “Community Engagement” classification

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching recently awarded Salt Lake Community College its 2015 Community Engagement Classification. Two- and four-year colleges and universities with a focus on community engagement were invited to apply for the classification, which the Carnegie Foundation began offering it in 2006. Applicants were asked to describe the nature and extent of their engagement with the community and to provide descriptions and examples of institutionalized practices of engagement that “showed alignment among mission, culture, leadership, resources and practices.” “The designation is an affirmation of our historic and deeply-held commitment to serving our community, helping us teach and advance knowledge while advancing the well being of others outside of the college,” said Jennifer Seltzer-Stitt, SLCC director of Community Relations. “Receiving this designation brings national recognition to our campus and places SLCC among an elite group of insti
