SLCC Women's Basketball Ranks No. 1 in WBCA Academic Honor Roll

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Women's Basketball is ranked No. 1 in junior college athletics on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Rolls for the 2011-12 year, released today.



This is the third time that SLCC Women's Basketball, led by 17th-year Head Coach Betsy Specketer, has earned a spot in the WBCA Honor Roll Top 25. Today's release marks the 10th appearance overall for SLCC Athletics on the junior/community college honor roll, and the third time that one of SLCC's teams has claimed the No. 1 spot in a junior college top 25 academic team.

“We're excited and really proud of our players for all of their work, not only on the court but in the classroom,” said SLCC Assistant Coach Brianna Finch. “We were really fortunate to have the group that we had, they were mature and focused enough to understand the importance of doing well outside the lines. It's a great honor for our program and the department, and we're appreciative of the recognition.”

The WBCA Academic Top 25 annually recognizes NCAA Divisions I, II and III; NAIA; and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2011-12 year is the 17th in which the WBCA has produced the honor rolls.

The Bruins performed well on the floor this season as well, finishing the year with an overall record of 18-13, 7-8 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC). The College hosted the Region 18 Women's Basketball Championships, claiming runner-up honors and upsetting defending National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Champions North Idaho College along the way.

SLCC freshman guard Sharon Lyman (Erda, UT) received the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for a 4.0 GPA over 45 or more credit hours. Sophomore Katie Walker and freshmen Cheryl Harless, Hayli Shurtz and Haley Sturdevant each received the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement for GPAs of 3.80-3.99 with a minimum of 45 completed credit hours.
