Title IX Discussion & Film Screening


KUED’s Women & Girls Lead is a multiyear public media initiative to educate, empower and connect Utahns on the issues facing women and girls worldwide. As part of the program, the College's Athletics Director Norma Carr will be participating on a panel discussion about Title IX that will take place on August 8th at 7:00 pm at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.

Also at the event, a film screening of the documentary film Strong! will be offered. Strong! is about Cheryl Haworth's struggle to defend her champion status as her lifetime weightlifting career inches towards its inevitable end. Strong! chronicles her journey and the challenges this unusual elite athlete faces, exploring popular notions of power, strength, beauty, and health. The panel discussion and film screening will promote KUED's Women and Girls Lead Initiative—an innovative public media campaign designed to celebrate, educate, and activate women, girls, and their allies across the globe to address the challenges of the 21st century. Women and Girls Lead is a strategic media campaign to support and sustain a growing movement to empower them, their communities, and future generations. Women and Girls Lead selects and supports powerful independent documentaries and other content on women and girl leaders.

Utah Women & Girls Lead is a KUED Diverse Voices Initiative made possible in part by American Express and the B. W. Bastian Foundation. 

The Utah Women & Girls Lead Initiative is a project of KUED and the Women & Girls Lead Advisory Group, including the Utah Film Center, Spy Hop Productions, SHEROES United, Salt Lake Community College Community Writing Center, The Center for Documentary Arts and Expression, Girl Scouts of Utah, University of Utah Women’s Week, United Way - Women’s Philanthropic Network, Governor’s Office for Diversity, Utah Women and Education Project, Salt Lake Community College Women’s Business Institute, National Association of Women Business Owners, Zions Bank Women for Educational Achievement Committee.

SLCC Alumnus and U.S. Diplomat to Speak at 2025 Commencement

Salt Lake Community College’s 2025 Commencement speaker Branigan Knowlton will share his perspectives drawn from a 12-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In serving his country, Knowlton has honed his foreign relations and diplomacy skills in Hong Kong, Mexico, Colombia and Italy. Knowlton is also a proud Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) alumnus (2002).     Knowlton currently serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Before reporting to the embassy, he was detailed to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship program. In Bogotá, Knowlton worked for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, and in Hermosillo, Mexico, he worked for the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
