SLCC Know Greater Heroes Program Named to Select 25

Salt Lake Community College’s Know Greater Heroes Program has been named one of Select Health’s Select 25 winners for 2013. As part of the award, the program will receive $2500 from Select Health. Know Greater Heroes is a leadership training program that involves SLCC athletes who travel to local elementary schools to teach children how to eat right, be active, and avoid drugs and alcohol.

Forty SLCC student athletes participate in the Know Greater Heroes program each year, and visit more than 30 schools each year, reaching approximately 25,000 elementary students, 1,700 elementary school educators, and over 54,000 parents annually.

“We are extremely honored to receive this recognition from an organization that does as much good in our community as SelectHealth," SLCC executive director of development Chad Miller said. "This award speaks to the tremendous benefits Salt Lake Community College's Know Greater Heroes program does in reaching tens of thousands of young people each year."

The Select 25 program supports those who encourage healthy behaviors or serve populations with special needs.

SelectHealth recognizes individuals and organizations that work to improve health or serving those with special needs.

“It is an honor to be associated to with these great organizations that do so much for our communities,” says SelectHealth President and CEO, Patricia Richards. “We are excited to help make a difference  in the lives of the people they serve.”

The Know Greater Heroes program is designed to fight childhood obesity, which has more than tripled in the past 30 years. Currently, 32 percent of U.S. children between ages 2 and 19 are overweight or obese. Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure and are at greater risk for bone-joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems.

"The College's student athletes in the Know Greater Heroes program serve as role models to the students and demonstrate that fitness can be fun, and in turn become leaders for life,” said SLCC athletic director Norma Carr. “After completing the program each student knows they should be getting at least 60 mins of activity in each day and learn there's plenty of fun ways to do so.”

The Select 25 award was created in 2008 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of SelectHealth. Award recipients were chosen by a selection committee of leaders from SelectHealth and Intermountain Healthcare and representatives from the nonprofit community.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
