Message to Students from Student Association Senate: Vote in November

As we draw to the close of the 2020 Spring Semester, the Student Association Senate would like to thank the students of Salt Lake Community College for the courage with which they overcame this unorthodox semester. We realize this ordeal has been taxing and we commend you for your perseverance. In these uncertain times, the best way to ensure your success is to continue to invest in yourself. As Malcom X once said “Education is the passport for the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

As your Student Senate, it is our responsibility to make sure your voices are heard. Over the past few months we have pushed forward with this goal by championing a college wide Sustainability Initiative, promoting dialogue about the ERA(Equal Rights Amendment), voicing your concerns about the rise in tuition, continuously being an advocate for the students in regards to parking policies, and joining with the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs to ensure that all students regardless of race, religion, creed, gender, or sexual orientation feel safe and included here on campus.

We invite you to join us as we broaden the scope of our mission. As you all know, 2020 is an election year. In November, we will have the opportunity to elect a candidate to the office of President of the United States. Though their term may only last 4 years, the decisions and actions the president takes can have lasting effects and ramifications for decades to come. To ensure that all voices are heard and all perspectives represented, we invite all who are legally eligible to register to vote and cast a ballot.

Please click this link, voterise.org, to learn more about registration and voting.

From everyone with your Salt Lake Community College Student Association Senate, thank you.

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
