College Planning for Students on Campuses this Fall

Students – we have greatly missed them in our classrooms and labs. We can’t wait to see them back on our campuses. But we want to see students return only with their health and safety as our highest priority.

With that, our plan is to welcome students back in time for the start of this coming fall semester with in-person and, as always, a wide variety of online class offerings. We will continue to monitor guidelines issued by the state and the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE), and, if there are any changes to this plan, we will notify students immediately.

USHE institutions, including SLCC, are currently working on what a return to campus will look and feel like this fall. Those details continue to evolve based on factors like “disease prevalence,” diagnostic testing supplies, contact tracing and the ability to provide “adequate” supplies of personal protective equipment.

Because public health issues vary widely across USHE’s public colleges and universities, SLCC’s return to in-person classes and labs might look different than other institutions. Under consideration at SLCC is a classroom scenario, for example, where half of a course’s students are in a classroom one day, then home viewing remotely the next while the other half takes their seats in the room with the instructor. Social distancing will be a key component of any classroom setting, making sure chairs and desks are properly spaced. The same goes for labs, some of which are already up and running at SLCC.

Stay with us – as more details become clear, we will update everyone. There is a lot of information to process – so many logistical hurdles to jump – before we can open our doors to students this fall. At a place where we educate and train about 60,000 people a year, we need to be sure we’re operating as safely as possible for every student who chooses SLCC as their start toward a better future.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Because we are using your vehicles for training purposes, we offer members of the College discounts on parts and labor.
