Current major: Graphic Communications. I chose this major since it is a transferable degree, unlike the other graphic design degree SLCC has, but overall, I chose it to go down the path of graphic design. 


What are your academic goals: My academic goals are to potentially transfer to a four year university.


Dream job: My dream job would be to own a tattoo shop and work as a tattoo artist.


Plan B: Work as a graphic designer. 


Why are you pursuing a higher education: Having a high school diploma isn’t good enough these days. So, getting a college education is the next step toward showing employers that you are able to work hard and have the skills necessary for the job. 



Why did you choose SLCC: I chose SLCC because it was affordable and close to home. I could have gone to a university, but I didn’t want to be in debt if I changed my mind on my major. 


What motivates you or inspires you at school or in life: Money motivates me. I don’t want to end up on the streets and I want to be able to give my future children the best life they can have.


What are some important life or career lessons you have learned so far: I learned that you can only rely on yourself to meet your goals, and that it’s ok to not be a people pleaser if it means that you are taking care of your mental health. 


What is the best advice you have been given or that you give others: The best advice that I have been given was to push forward now with school and get it all done, because this is just a sliver of the rest of your life, and if you don’t do it now, you may regret it later.

Hobbies: Drawing, art commissions, watching YouTube, watching horror movies and hiking.

Did you know you can access SLCC lab software for free from your own computing device?   Come learn how SLCC is supporting BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) with All Access. SLCC Alumnus and U.S. Diplomat to Speak at 2025 Commencement

Salt Lake Community College’s 2025 Commencement speaker Branigan Knowlton will share his perspectives drawn from a 12-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In serving his country, Knowlton has honed his foreign relations and diplomacy skills in Hong Kong, Mexico, Colombia and Italy. Knowlton is also a proud Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) alumnus (2002).     Knowlton currently serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Before reporting to the embassy, he was detailed to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship program. In Bogotá, Knowlton worked for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, and in Hermosillo, Mexico, he worked for the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
