Meet Our Students: Shelby Campbell

Shelby Campbell

Preferred pronouns: She / Her

Age: 20

Lives in: Herriman

From: West Jordan, Utah

Current major:

Media Music. I've always loved music since I was young, and the media music program seemed just right for me. It mixes elements of acoustic recording and digital midi which is helping me better understand what I am capable of as a musician.

Academic goals:

I'm not as interested in a degree as I am the knowledge I'm gaining from my classes. My popular music band class has helped me come out of my shell and I've met so many lovely people that I really hope I stay in touch with after graduation.

Dream job:

Musician, Performer, and Mixer. I feel like the more hats you can wear in the music industry, the more valuable an asset you are to those you work with. I want to know a little bit about everything and specialize in performance and writing.

Plan B:

While continuing to attempt to find work in the music industry, I would use my resume that I've built up to find a high paying job that could help me elevate my music and make my dreams more achievable.

Why higher education:

I want to learn more about a field that was never touched on in high school. My school music department was very underfunded, and I never had the opportunity to work on my music skills in high school.

Why SLCC:

I heard great things about the music department at SLCC and wanted to see if it would help hone my skills. It has definitely brought out a completely different side of me that I didn't know existed, and I've become much more confident.

What motivates you or inspires you at school and/or in life:

Music. I feel that music is the closest I can ever get to experiencing a moment with somebody. You're painting a picture of a moment or emotion stuck in time, and being able to express myself like that was always something I knew I needed.

Important life and/or career lessons so far:

I've learned that it's better to be high energy and terrible than low energy and great. You need to get up and move and keep the audience engaged physically if you want to be a great performer.

Best advice you have been given or that you give others:

Don't be afraid to play loud. You may make mistakes, but if you aren't practicing putting yourself out there and giving your full effort, it won't translate even after hundreds of hours of practice. You need to be confident, even though mistakes may happen.

Family:

I have two little sisters, Lilly (10) and Tessa (11). I also have a little brother, Christian (11). Christian and Tessa are twins

Hobbies:

Guitar, piano, music production, hanging around my partner Alex, performing at coffee shops.
