Commencement 2022: Legislative Champion

The Salt Lake Community College Legislative Champion honors state legislators who demonstrate through their legislative activities a commitment to advancing and improving higher education for the state. The college’s Legislative Champion is selected at the conclusion of every legislative session.

Kelly B. Miles

Utah House of Representatives District 11, Weber County

Representative Kelly Miles began his service in the Utah House of Representatives in 2016. He quickly earned the confidence of his colleagues and assumed key leadership positions in the legislature. In 2020, Representative Miles was named chair of the Higher Education Appropriations Committee. He also serves on the House Health and Human Services Committee and the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee.

Since taking office, Representative Miles has been a champion for Utah’s higher education institutions. He met often with Salt Lake Community College leaders to learn about the college’s priorities and perspectives on key issues. During Representative Miles’ time chairing the Higher Education Appropriations Committee, Utah colleges and universities received unprecedented increases in state funding for various programs and initiatives, including many that directly benefitted SLCC’s students.

Representative Miles graduated from Weber State University with a bachelor’s in business management and from the University of Utah with a juris doctor and a master’s degree in business administration. His legal career of more than 30 years began with the law firm Froerer and Miles, where he still practices as an attorney and partner.

In addition to his professional life and work in the legislature, Representative Miles is committed to his community. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Weber/Davis and has been a past chair and member of the McKay-Dee Hospital Board and the Ogden-Weber Technical College Board. A resident of South Ogden, Representative Miles and his wife, the former Linda Burdett, have four children and seven grandchildren.

SLCC Alumnus and U.S. Diplomat to Speak at 2025 Commencement

Salt Lake Community College’s 2025 Commencement speaker Branigan Knowlton will share his perspectives drawn from a 12-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In serving his country, Knowlton has honed his foreign relations and diplomacy skills in Hong Kong, Mexico, Colombia and Italy. Knowlton is also a proud Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) alumnus (2002). Knowlton currently serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Before reporting to the embassy, he was detailed to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship program. In Bogotá, Knowlton worked for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, and in Hermosillo, Mexico, he worked for the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
