Winter Safety Tips for Our Community College



As the winter season approaches, ensuring the safety and well-being of the SLCC community becomes increasingly important. With colder temperatures and unpredictable weather conditions, it is essential to take a proactive approach. Our Facilities Department wants to remind us of two simple yet critical tips to help the SLCC community navigate the winter months safely.

1. Watch Your Step

One of the most common hazards during winter is slipping on icy or snowy surfaces. A simple way to minimize the risk of falls is by wearing appropriate footwear. It is recommended to wear for shoes or boots with non-slip soles to provide better traction on slick surfaces. Additionally, when walking on campus or outside, take smaller steps. This technique offers greater control and balance, reducing the chances of slipping. Remember to watch out for icy patches or snow drifts that may not be immediately obvious.

2. Take Your Time

Rushing can lead to accidents, especially in winter conditions. Allow plenty of time for commuting or walking between classes. Having ample time to do things allows the opportunity to pay closer attention to surroundings, which in return makes it easy to respond more effectively to changing conditions, whether that means taking a different route or taking more time. Adopting a more relaxed pace during winter can provide safer navigation on campus or the road for yourself or those around you.

In addition to these tips, we encourage everyone to proactively maintain a safe environment. Many building entrances at our college have accessible snowmelt and shovels for those who are able and willing to help. If you notice an area that needs attention, please reach out to FIXIT at 801-957-3911 to report any hazardous conditions such as snow or ice. When contacting them, be sure to specify the campus and precise location of the issue.

Let’s work together to ensure a safe winter season for everyone at SLCC. By watching our steps and taking our time, we can enjoy the beauty of winter while keeping our community safe and secure.

Did you know you can access SLCC lab software for free from your own computing device?   Come learn how SLCC is supporting BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) with All Access. SLCC Alumnus and U.S. Diplomat to Speak at 2025 Commencement

Salt Lake Community College’s 2025 Commencement speaker Branigan Knowlton will share his perspectives drawn from a 12-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In serving his country, Knowlton has honed his foreign relations and diplomacy skills in Hong Kong, Mexico, Colombia and Italy. Knowlton is also a proud Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) alumnus (2002).     Knowlton currently serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Before reporting to the embassy, he was detailed to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship program. In Bogotá, Knowlton worked for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, and in Hermosillo, Mexico, he worked for the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
