Empowering Futures: Mindy Bateman’s Impact on Healthcare Education

Mindy Bateman’s Career and Technical Education contributions were recently recognized by the prestigious Utah Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) State with the Counseling and Career Development Professional Award. With over two decades of experience in finance and administration at the Utah Health Education Center (UHEC), Mindy transitioned into a hands-on leadership role as Center Director, where her impact truly began.

One of her standout initiatives is the Pre-Health Summer Program, which offers high school students a unique blend of classroom learning, field trips to healthcare facilities, and opportunities to interact with industry professionals. Remarkably, 74% of participants have enrolled in health science programs at Salt Lake Community College and other institutions throughout Utah.

Mindy’s efforts to support students in finding their path in their academic journey are reflected in her former students. One of them knew their calling was within the healthcare field but was unsure of pursuing a lengthy educational path. Thanks to the Pre-Health Summer Program, where students are introduced to multiple career fields within the healthcare industry, that particular student was able to find a career path that met their expectations and fulfilled their passion for health science by pursuing surgical tech.

Through her advocacy, community engagement, and programs that empower students, Mindy sets a powerful example of how dedication can shape the future of healthcare education. Mindy credits her dedicated team for her success, stating, “I am incredibly grateful that I get to do the work that I do, but none of it would be possible without the support of my team.”

SLCC Alumnus and U.S. Diplomat to Speak at 2025 Commencement

Salt Lake Community College’s 2025 Commencement speaker Branigan Knowlton will share his perspectives drawn from a 12-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In serving his country, Knowlton has honed his foreign relations and diplomacy skills in Hong Kong, Mexico, Colombia and Italy. Knowlton is also a proud Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) alumnus (2002). Knowlton currently serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Before reporting to the embassy, he was detailed to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship program. In Bogotá, Knowlton worked for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, and in Hermosillo, Mexico, he worked for the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
