SLCC business students end year by planting trees

Salt Lake Community College student Lansia Wann needed to come up with a final project for Melodee Lambert’s BUS 2200 class. Wann, a culinary student who is graduating on Thursday, chose to do a service-learning project that involved other members of her class. The result: Wann and her classmates will be planting trees Thursday morning at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus, just a few hours before Wann dons a cap and gown for commencement ceremonies.

“I researched various nonprofit organizations in Utah using the web to find a service-learning project,” Wann said. “Many sites and several lists later, I found TreeUtah. I browsed around their site looking for inspiration and eventually thought of a plan. Why not sponsor a tree planting and invite our class on our final project presentation day?” Wann’s project was put to a vote among other proposals in the class and it received the push forward it needed to come to fruition.

Wann and her classmates found sponsors and help from Lambert, the SLCC Student Association, Harmons Neighborhood Grocer, Walmart, TreeUtah and SLCC grounds, facilities and sign departments. She and her classmates will be planting trees on what will be their final day of class, beginning at about 10:15 on May 7. “I suppose I’ll have to go home and change out of my dirt-ridden clothes before I head to graduation that day, eh?” Wann rhetorically asked.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring.
