SLCC Athletic Director Norma Carr Wins YWCA Outstanding Achievement Award

Salt Lake Community College Athletics Director Norma Carr will be presented with the YWCA outstanding achievement award at the YWCA’s 24th Annual Leader Luncheon.

Norma Carr will be recognized for her leadership and the pioneering role she has had in providing Utah’s women and girls with athletic and academic opportunities. Prior to becoming the first and only woman in Utah’s history to serve as athletic director for both men and women’s programs, Carr graduated from Brigham Young University as a five-sport athlete from BYU in 1969 and went on to receive her Master’s Degree at the University of Utah. In her role as SLCC Athletic Director, Carr oversaw the construction of the Lifetime Activities Center and Bruin Arena, Cate Field and the College’s softball diamond.

Carr was instrumental in bringing women's varsity athletics at the University of Utah, and was the school's first head coach in both softball and volleyball. She has received extraordinary professional recognition for the quality of her work and the influence she has had on women’s, high school and collegiate athletics, including being named  National Administrator of the Year in 2009.

Her teams have always finished among the very top in the conference, having won numerous titles in the past 15 years. In 2009 the Men's Basketball team won the NJCAA National Championship. In both 2011 and 2012, the SLCC Women's Softball team was NJCAA National Champion runner-up.

Norma has been inducted into the Utah Softball Hall of Fame, the Utah Coaches of Merit Hall of Fame, and the UHSSA Officials Hall of Fame.  In 2007 she was named to the UHSSA "Circle of Fame", and two years later was awarded the NJCAA National Administrator of the Year—the most prestigious award for athletic directors at U.S. two-year higher educational institutions.
