SLCC Solar Program Shows Commitment to Workforce Development, Green Energy

Salt Lake Community College offers a Solar Photovoltaic Systems program that prepares students for careers in the nation’s alternative energy sector. Graduates of the program are qualified to assemble and install Photovoltaic panels and systems that capitalize on a clean, renewable energy source.

“This program highlights Salt Lake Community College’s commitment to help prepare Utah’s workforce for the future in renewable energy technologies and energy conservation,” SLCC Dean of the School of Professional and Economic Development Karen Gunn said. “We embrace our role in promoting local and regional workforce development. This training provides a competitive, value added skill set for high demand jobs in alternative energy."

Solar Photovoltaic Systems is one of thirty-three programs the College has developed over the past three years that are specifically designed to be responsive to the needs of industry and workforce development in Utah. Students who earn a certificate from the program qualify for taking the entry-level exam, the PV technical sales certification, or the PV installer certification exam. All exams are nationally recognized by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners.

The College’s program was bolstered by the recent completion of Utah’s first Solar Photovoltaic (PV) training yard. The yard was completed at the College’s Meadowbrook Campus located at 250 West 3900 South in Salt Lake City.

“The new photovoltaic training yard really helps improve that program, Gunn said. “It’s the first training yard of its kind in the state and we’re doing everything we can to make sure that Utah’s energy industry gets all of the highly skilled green energy technicians it needs.”

SLCC’s Solar Program courses instruct students in basic electrical theory, learning the major components of a PV system and all the way up to the design and installation of large array PV systems.

In addition to the Solar Photovoltaic Systems program, SLCC’s Green Academy offers courses in in the following areas: Electric Power Technology, Green Retrofitting, Lineman Apprenticeship, Smart Grid Technology, Solar Photovoltaic Systems, and a CNG certification program.

The Green Academy also offers a new energy management program that trains students in renewable energy, LEED certification, HVAC controls and equipment, and energy audits. Students learn the most efficient current methods in the energy management industry pertaining to residential light and commercial energy analysis, weatherization, indoor pollutants, and control strategies. Taken together, these programs represent a commitment to help prepare Utah’s workforce for a future in renewable energy technologies and energy conservation.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation.
