SLCC Students Strut on Roses at Art Meets Fashion


Salt Lake Community College’s Fashion Institute students are taking part in the 4th annual Art Meets Fashion event that will benefit Red Butte Gardens. The benefit show will be held on September 8 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. at Red Butte Gardens’ Rose House Plaza, located at 300 Wakara Way in Salt Lake City.

“Art Meets Fashion brings together local art and local fashion to benefit a local cause,” said event co-producer Heidi M. Gress.  All proceeds from the event will go to a new Red Butte Garden Water Conservation Garden campaign. Runway shows take place on the garden pathway in the Rose and Wedding Gardens; the fine art exhibition will be held in the Rose House Plaza.

Four local fashion designers will display their work at the event: Beckett & Robb, Sophie St. Claire, Nephi Garcia, and Heggy Gonzalez. An exhibit entitled Metamorphosis will feature the work of 15 fine artists working in painting, mixed media, and photography. Artists include: Shelly Huynh, Cody Chamberlain, Mark Crenshaw, Blake Palmer, Jon Lang, Zuzanna Audette, Chase McCleary, Jenevieve Hubbard,Susan Ferguson, Silvia Solis, Jimmi Toro, Matthew Potter, Todd Powelson, Nanette Wiser, Alexander Ferguson, and David Marshall Habben.

In addition to the fashion show and fine art exhibition, a swing band and dancing will be held on the amphitheater stage.

Attendees can expect an elegant evening with a 1940s old Hollywood feel that showcases the beauty of the gardens, she said. Guests will receive a program with a map to guide them to the food, art and fashion show.

 The Salt Lake Community College Fashion Institute offers the latest trends, skills, and technology students need to succeed in the global economy. The program prepares students for careers in fashion design, fashion merchandising, costuming, technical apparel design and custom dressmaking. Students explore the world of fashion through fashion sketching, creative design, computer applications, draping, pattern drafting, and more.
