SLCC Is A JED Campus

Salt Lake Community College launched the JED Campus partnership program to provide students with more comprehensive mental health support. The JED Foundation is a nationwide initiative that helps strengthen schools by providing programs and systems to create a caring culture and protect students’ emotional health through training, education, policies and procedures, to name a few. “The JED Foundation is a truly outstanding organization, which has at its core the desire to positively impact mental health and overall wellness on college campuses,” says Brett Perozzi, vice president of student affairs. Facilities: Fostering Employee Growth One Person At A Time

The  Facilities Department  is one of Salt Lake Community College largest departments based on the number of employees. They house the most talented individuals within their trades, fields and expertise. Across the division are project managers, carpenters, plumbers and, of course, our ever present custodial and grounds people. Tyler Clark, lead plumber and plumbing apprenticeship program instructor, started his career at SLCC in the facilities department in 2014 as a proud member of the custodial team. When a plumbing position opened up Tyler was interested but didn’t have the requisite knowledge or certificate. Tyler decided to take to his supervisors and the plumbing team and found the support he needed to complete the Plumbing Apprenticeship program. Upon graduating from his program, he was approached by SLCC, where he was offered the opportunity to become an  instructor at the Plumbing Apprenticeship program . Forensic Science: The Science Behind Crime Scene Investigation

There are red splatter marks all over the classroom floor and yellow tape is blocking off the area, but students seem more excited than alarmed. That’s because these Forensic Science students are working as a team to uncover the clues that will help solve a mock crime. The mock crime scene is part of the final experience for students in the Criminal Justice class CJ 1350, Intro into Forensic Science, taught by Assistant Professor Stephanie L. Hoffman .    National Forensic Science Week (NFSW) is an annual event that takes place the third week of September. NFSW recognizes the contribution that Forensic Science makes to the criminal justice system. It is an opportunity to celebrate academic programs, forensic professionals, and scientific research in the various forensic disciplines. Forensic Science plays a critical role in the justice system that can help with the prosecution of a perpetrator to absolve an innocent person from a charge.   “Forensic Science varies greatly from

75 Years of Culinary Arts

1995 Culinary Arts Ice Sculpture Competition  September 14, 1948, marked the day when Salt Lake Area Vocational School (SLAV) opened its doors to teach skills to future generations; one of those programs was Food Service. What started as an apprenticeship program has evolved into a degree program. Cooking and baking were two of the original programs taught at SLAV. The two-year apprentice program was designed to teach students the skills necessary to obtain a job upon completing the program and advance in the field. The programs not only focused on the kitchen skills and chemistry of the food but also the theoretical aspect of the arts of cooking and baking. By 1976, Utah Technical College, formerly SLAV, started offering one-year and two-year programs catering to students' wants and needs for their future careers.
