SLCC, Intermountain Healthcare Partners on Diversity Scholarships for Nursing

Intermountain Healthcare recently donated $100,000 to Salt Lake Community College in support of a scholarship program that will benefit diversity in nursing.

“We are excited to support the Salt Lake Community College nursing program in this important work that will benefit the nursing students and also the many patients they will serve throughout their careers,” said Mikelle Moore, vice president of Intermountain Community Benefit. “Healthcare and nursing leaders recognize the connection between a diverse nursing workforce and the ability to provide high quality care to meet a variety of patient needs in our communities. Our priority is to improve health in all communities we serve.”

The donation through Intermountain Healthcare represents a partnership between SLCC’s nursing program and Intermountain Healthcare’s Human Resources and Nursing departments. The goal is to help diverse students become nurses in order to assist with the growing need for non-English speaking nurses in the Salt Lake Valley.

“In terms of diversity, we’re always looking at ways to support diversity because we have so many different populations in Utah now,” said JoAnne Wright, SLCC dean of the School of Health Sciences. “We want to make sure that our nursing program reflects that changing population. It’s a very generous gift, and I think it’s a really valuable partnership.”

SLCC Receives $600K National Science Foundation grant

Salt Lake Community College was recently awarded a $604,000 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program.

The Foundation’s program supports scholarships for academically talented students demonstrating a financial need, enabling them to enter the workforce following completion of an associate or bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline. Institutions throughout the U.S. annually vie for grants from this highly competitive program.

“Our plan is designed to substantially increase the number of graduates in STEM disciplines who come from disadvantaged backgrounds,” said Craig Caldwell, SLCC interim dean of the School of Science, Mathematics & Engineering. “Economic growth in Utah has created an immediate need for STEM graduates in the workforce. Both the private sector and state government are strongly articulating the need to rapidly increase graduation rates in STEM areas to fill the needs of local employers.”

Caldwell said the funds will support students, in particular minorities and women, who are committed to completing STEM-related degrees. This will include traditional students as well as a group of near-completers who have "stalled" in their education. The outcome is expected to be a doubling of the number of graduates in SLCC's STEM programs over the course of the five-year project.

These events will begin at 11 a.m. at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus and will be webcast to other sites so the entire SLCC community can take part. Facilitated discussions from 12:30-2:30 p.m. will be held at the South City and Jordan campuses for staff who cannot travel to Taylorsville.

Mr. Kasahara will talk about the most pressing problems facing Japanese journalism today. Anyone interested in the future of the U.S. news industry will find Kasahara's insights compelling. He will consider issues such as the increasingly radical opinions expressed in Japanese newspaper editorials as a way to stand out in the industry and the effects this tactic has had on polarizing the country's politics. Issues ranging from Japan's reliance on nuclear power to strengthening its military relationship with the U.S. and dealing with its WWII legacy are sure to be interesting.

The Visual Art & Design Department invites Salt Lake Community College students to participate in a poster design contest announcing the 2015 SLCC Student Art Showcase.
This contest is open to all currently enrolled SLCC and SLCC Concurrent Enrollment students.

(Professionals or instructors are not eligible. Entrants must be able to verify student status.) The winning poster design will be used to promote the 2015 SLCC Student Art Showcase on campus as well as other venues and media. In addition, a cash award of $100 will be given to the student winner.
Only 1 SUBMISSION PER STUDENT will be accepted. The SLCC Student Art Showcase Committee reserves the right to accept or reject any entry. The student winner may be asked to alter elements of the design for all the various art show applications as needed.
Poster design contest submissions will be displayed in 2-177 (SLCC South Campus, North End) from FEBRUARY 20 through 27. The SLCC Student Art Showcase Committee will make final determination as to winning entry.
REQUIRED SPECIFICATIONS for poster design contest:
Document Setup: Tabloid 11 x 17 inches (tall) output at 100%. Set top, left and right margins at .375 inch. The bottom margin should be set at 1.5 inches. This will allow a white border around the design.
File Format: File should be created in either Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator ONLY. Adobe Photoshop may only be used to alter photos or create effects. Type works best in InDesign or Illustrator. Remember this is a PRINT JOB. The actual file should NOT be sent, but if chosen will need to be in one of the required native file formats, no pdfs.
Originality: Any illustration, graphic or photo must be the original work of the poster designer – or – a signed release form (if using another SLCC student(s)’s work, as in the case of photo or illustration) must be presented if a poster is chosen as the winner. NO STOCK PHOTOS. NO PUBLIC DOMAIN PHOTOS. If more than one SLCC student works on the poster, all must be credited and all must share in the winnings if chosen.
Color: 4 Color Process (cmyk) or Pantone Spot Color on white paper. NO RGB! Submission: ONE output of poster design MUST BE SUBMITTED. Do not mount.
Student Information: Please put your NAME, PHONE and EMAIL on the back, lower right hand corner of your poster. Posters will not be accepted if these three items are not listed.

SLCC alumnus and Utah artis Ruby Chacon and Natalia Deeb-Sossa, Associate Professor, Chicana/o Studies, University of California at Davis, will give two presentation about their life and work. These discussions will cover there new exhibition, Creadoras de Cultura: Activismo y Espiritualidad (Creators of Culture: Activism and Spirituality) held February 13 - March 14 at the Mestizo Gallery (631 W North Temple, Suite 700).

New Acquisitions at the SLCC Libraries! - Mango Languages

The SLCC Libraries have just acquired an exciting new resource that tie in perfectly with the college’s mission for diversity -- the Mango Languages learning resource -- found under “M” in the library web page of alphabetized database offerings.

Once you’ve landed on the library’s Mango Languages link you can get started by setting up a free Mango account, or just jump right in by clicking on the Quick Start bar option.

This content-rich resource gives you access to 65 different language learning modules (the newest offering is the Cherokee language module), as well as full access to foreign language and culture feature films that help enrich the language learning experience.

In December 2014, faculty members from the SLCC Language Department attended a Mango webinar alongside SLCC Libraries staff to learn more about this exciting new resource that is available to all SLCC students, faculty, staff and administration through their college affiliation.
