SLCC and Granger High Launch Program to Increase College Access for First-Generation and Low-Income Students

On Wednesday, January 24, 60 Granger High School freshmen will receive a free iPad as participants in the school’s new PACE Program ( Partnership for Accessing College Education ). The Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) donor-funded program has significantly increased high school graduation and college participation rates in the Salt Lake Valley for low-income and first-generation college students, over the last 10 years.  "We’re pretty pumped about the PACE program. It helps the kids see the end goal at the beginning of high school—many students think college is unaffordable or not an option for them,” said Granger’s Principal, Tyler Howe, PhD. “All the steps leading to graduation and college can seem abstract. PACE can help facilitate and paint the picture from the beginning for these students, with a carrot at the end—a scholarship to SLCC.”   A generous gift from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation will establish Granger as the sixth local high school to host PA

Pharmacy Tech

A critical member of the healthcare system is a pharmacy technician, and at Salt Lake Community College a student can obtain their certification in as little as three semesters. Pharmacy techs not only get to interact with the patient, but they are also essential in providing the patients with the correct medication that will be utilized for their healing journey. SLCC's pharmacy tech certificate program is a comprehensive, hands-on program where students get the opportunity to not only gain knowledge in the classroom but also learn in the real world. The pharmacy program requires students to obtain an externship at a licensed pharmacy where they will learn immeasurable skills. Upon graduation, students will be qualified to work at a pharmacy and prepared to take the national certification exam. SLCC graduate pharmacy technicians work closely with pharmacists to ensure that the patient's health is at the forefront. The collaboration between the healthcare professionals, from

Rising Star Alumni Award Recipient Finds the Hidden Strengths

Brooke Baxter believes every weakness has a hidden strength, and that you just need to figure out the strength. She used this strategy to mine the challenges of a PTSD diagnosis to persist and excel as a student at Salt Lake Community College and then at the University of Utah.   "I used my hypervigilant mind to pay close attention to detail. And I used my constantly racing mind to sustain focus and memorize material,” recalls Brooke, who graduated from SLCC in 2017 with an associate’s degree in General Studies.   SLCC’s Alumni Leadership Council has selected Brooke as the 2024 recipient for the Rising Star Award, which recognizes SLCC alumni who have made a profound and positive impact in their communities and beyond, and who have graduated from the College within the last seven years.     “The College’s commitment to educating the future generation is often rewarded with outstanding individuals who go above and beyond in their respective careers and community involvement,” says

Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

SLCC Law Enforcement Academy Graduation In celebration of National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on January 9, we invite you to learn more about SLCC’s Law Enforcement Academy at our Miller Campus. Salt Lake Community College has been instrumental in training and shaping hundreds of law enforcement officers in the State of Utah since the academy's conception in 1987. SLCC's Law Enforcement Academy allows cadets to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their field and graduate. Many cadets return to SLCC to further their education and continue advancing within law enforcement. Sergeant Richard Montanez, who gets to interact with the SLCC Academy cadets and evaluate and monitor their progress, says that an average of 75 percent of cadets get placed in a job before they graduate from the academy. "There is a job for everyone in this field out there. It may not be where they want it now, but I am confident they will get there with hard work," says S
