The Utah Foundation Honors SLCC President Huftalin with Its Annual Insight Award

The Utah Foundation honored SLCC President Deneece G. Huftalin with the Insight Award today, March 20, for her outstanding service and dedication to students. She was recognized along with Natalie Gochnour, an associate dean in the David Eccles School of Business and director of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah (U of U).

Before President of Weber University Brad Mortensen welcomed Huftalin to the podium to receive the award, he shared stories of when they were both earning their PhDs at the University and as colleagues. “She is always finding ways to champion opportunities for student—you feel her passion when she is advocating for students,” said Mortensen.

Awarded annually, the Insight Award recognizes civic leaders who, through a career of service or philanthropic support, have worked with integrity to provide insights in the public policy arena with the aim of improving government.

Huftalin explained that insight suggests that you really dig into how you think and feel about a situation— that you use solid facts and also call on your emotional intelligence to make decisions. “It is an honor to receive an award that actually recognizes that characteristic,” said Huftalin.

She explained in her home, she and her family love movies and that they will use lines from movies to communicate to each other. With that in mind, she wrapped up her speech with a line from one of her favorite westerns, The Magnificent Seven. “To be in the service of others, with people I respect like you all, I shouldn’t have to ask for anything else.’ Thank you.”

The mission of the Utah Foundation is to inform and engage Utahns with illuminating, independent, nonpartisan public-policy research.
