As we close our college for the next week, I wanted to also share the magnificent news that  our SLCC Chamber Singers will travel on January 17 to Washington DC to participate in the Inauguration Choir competition.  Our college will be represented by forty students/faculty and staff will be going on the trip, competing, and attending the Inauguration on January 21. They will return to SLC on Jan. 22.

Salt Lake Community College held a completion ceremony for its Physical Therapist Assistant Program at the College’s Health Sciences Center Auditorium and Atrium. The graduating class had 19 graduates, five of whom received perfect 4.0 grade point averages in coursework for their two-year degrees. “We get really great students in the program,” Diana Ploeger, SLCC Health Sciences Professor said. “The Physical Therapy program has exacting standards and rigorous prerequisite requirements. Our students enter with a strong knowledge base, and they leave well prepared. They’re professional, highly qualified, and interact well with patients and other professionals.” Students receive an associate of applied science degree in Physical Therapy Assistant program. “Every graduating student looking for a job as a physical therapy professional gets one,” Ploeger said. “We have a good group of students who really helped each other academically. Business owners Josh and Stefanie Bevans were delighted by the assistance provided by the SBDC and thrilled in October 2012 to mark the company’s 20th anniversary. Steamroller Copies began as a retail and printing shop in St. George, owned by Josh’s mother and operated by several family members. Today the business includes three retail stores located through-out southwestern Utah, and has expanded to include their sister company Design To Print—a national manufacturer and wholesale distributor for billboards, large graphics, and more.  The two businesses provide employment to more than 70 residents in the region who fulfill roles as sales, design, marketing or web professionals. “Steamroller Copies and Design To Print are cutting edge businesses for both our region and the global market,” says Len Erickson, Director of the Small Business De

Salt Lake Community College played its first Scenic West Athletic Conference basketball games against Snow College in Bruin Arena at the Lifetime Activities Center on Saturday, Dec. 15. The No. 20-ranked SLCC Women's Basketball team (7-4, 0-1 SWAC) lost in overtime to in-state rival Snow College (6-6, 1-0 SWAC) 67-64 on Saturday night at Bruin Arena. SLCC held an eight point lead at the half, but the Snow Badgers shot 50% in the second half and held a three point lead with just seconds remaining in regulation. The SLCC Men's Basketball team (10-2, 1-0 SWAC) earned a 74-70 win over No. 20-ranked Snow College (12-2, 0-1 SWAC) on Saturday night at Bruin Arena. SLCC snapped Snow's nine-game win streak and in doing so extended its own streak to six consecutive victories. The game marked the opening of the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) season. Registration is currently open for Salt Lake Community College’s Spring 2013 semester. All College enrollment services are available during normal business hours for the week of December 17-21. “The week of December 17th through the 21st is really one of the best times of the year for students to do business with the College,” Public Relations Director Joy Tlou said. “While so many others are busy making plans and traveling for the holidays, the College is open and fully staffed and ready to help students register and complete anything they need to get ready for the upcoming semester.” SLCC’s application deadline for Spring semester is January 9. Classes begin January 14. SLCC offers courses in more than 120 programs, in credit and non-credit options. The Students’ Previous Achievements Hailed by Forbes Magazine and ‘Shark Tank’ Kisstixx is an Orem based start-up that launched in 2010 by Dallas Robinson and Mike Buonomo, two undergraduate students at Utah Valley University. In just two years since they sold their first box of Kisstixx lip-balm, Robinson and Buonomo now distribute  products worldwide. “We have set ourselves apart from the (rest) of the lip balm industry because we are creating a fun, innovative, high-quality product that is delivered for a better value,” said Robinson. “Kisstixx is unique in that the lip balm comes in two compatible flavors.   When you take one and give one to your special someone the flavors mix to create a new experience. It’s fun, it’s hip and the flavors are incredible.” Forbes magazine selected Dallas Robinson, who created the vision for Kisstixx, as an “All Star Student Entrepreneur” in August 2012. Salt Lake Community College and the Utah Small Business Development Center honor the business success of U.S. Army and first Gulf War Veteran, Jeremiah Espinoza. Following his tour of duty, Espinoza decided he wanted to start a business selling his handmade woven braided western whips, key chains and bracelets. There were many significant obstacles standing in the way of his dream to start his own business, however. Within a few months of active duty, Espinoza started to loose his vision and doctors were unable to determine if the vision loss was related to his service with the Army, or otherwise. “I was completely in the dark,” says Espinoza. Despite his vision loss, Espinoza was determined to not let it stop him. Espinoza taught himself how to rely on touch rather than sight to create his braided goods. “Everything I do now is by feel. As for the difference (between my work before and after loosing my sight), I think I make them better now.” After crafting a few of his products

A group of Salt Lake Community College students will host students from the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salt Lake for a weekend of SLCC basketball games on December 15. SLCC and Boys & Girls Club students will attend SLCC basketball games against Snow College. The women's game will begin at 3:00 p.m. and the men’s at 5:00 p.m. “Our goal is to familiarize youth with college expectations, benefits, and fundamental skills at an early age while assuaging any fears they may have of higher education,” SLCC student participant Keith McDonald said.  “The connection between SLCC and the Boys & Girls Club of America is one that is can really be a positive benefit to many young people.” As part of their business communication class, the students previously held tutoring sessions and a College tour for the young students. The Student Access and Success Council has been busy this semester discussing the completion initiative and efforts SLCC is making to increase our success rates for students.   A few initiatives that are underway: an expanded summer bridge program for under-prepared students a more comprehensive and seamless support system for students attending the South City campus membership on Faculty Senate sub-committess reviewing clearer pathways and embedding student success initiatives in the classroom. We are excited as a Council that  larger, more comprehensive conversations are occuring across campus around success initiatives and we are happy to be a part of the 2013 Professional Development Day to hear from Dr. Terry O'Banion.  His messages and ideas are centered on student success and promise to underscore current initiatives and provoke thought about new ways of assisting students. The Miller Business Resource Center (MBRC) at Salt Lake Community College, Salt Lake City Tech Startups and REES Capital present Nerdapalooza v.0, a tradeshow and incubator-style demonstration day on December 13. Salt Lake Community College is holding a StepAhead Scholarship Night on December 12 from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the Student Event Center on the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. Workshops will be presented on applying, writing essays, and interviewing for scholarships that are available. SLCC staff will be present to assist students with all aspects of applying and gaining admission to the College. Though aimed primarily at high school seniors, this event is free and open to the public. Accommodations for the disabled will be available. The Small Business Development Center has selected Pro Image Sports, as a nominee for the annual 2012 regional business award. “Opening the store is a dream come true. My father was a business owner and I too have always wanted to have my own business,” said Troy Osborn, Owner of Pro Image Sports in Layton, Utah. “I feel that I have created an opportunity for a better future. I didn’t want my future to be dependent on somebody else. This way it’s up to me whether I succeed or not.” After more than 12 years in retail sales and management, Osborn decided to pursue his lifelong dream. On January 1, 2012, Osborn quit his job and began working on a business plan, loan applications, and paperwork to obtain a franchise license from Pro Image Sports. Salt Lake Community College is offering a December term, beginning December 10. General education courses for the condensed term meet Monday through Friday for two or three weeks, several hours per day. These courses are open to all currently enrolled SLCC students. The classes offered between fall and spring semesters provide students the opportunity to complete general education and study skills coursework they need in between the busy regular semesters. Students use the same registration protocol to sign up. Registration is open through the first day of class. Last Month, the SLCC libraries put together a book giveaway for the children in the Eccles Lab School. The library staff personally gave  “gently-used” books that had been purchased by library staff donations to 50 kids. Salt Lake Community College presents the Carols of Christmas concert. The concert features performances by the SLCC combined concert choirs, and will include many of the most beloved holiday songs. It will take place on December 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, located at South Temple and C Street in Salt Lake City. The College Concert Choirs consists of the SLCC Chamber Singers, the College Chorale and Salt City Voices. The Chamber Singers is made up of forty auditioned students majoring in fields from automotive trades to music. One hundred student voices contribute to the College Chorale, which is dedicated to the distinctive and varied repertoire for large choir. Salt City Voices is a fifteen member vocal and instrumental ensemble devoted to performing contemporary music. The Carols of Christmas is the final performance of the College’s Fall Choir Concert series. The SLCC Fall Choir Concert series is part of the College’s Arts & Cultural Events (ACE) program. AC

It’s time for a new exhibit from the SLCC Archives at the Markosian Library! During December 2012 and January 2013 the SLCC Archives Exhibit will highlight publications from present and past SLCC Faculty and Staff.  This display will showcase the authors’ bios and publications.  The books, drawn from the SLCC Libraries’ Collections, will be displayed in the southwest alcove of the Redwood Library for students, staff, and faculty to peruse or even check out! Come take a look at the extraordinary works from SLCC’s own.  The exhibit will run from the beginning of December through the end of January.
