Celebrating Interfaith Cooperation at SLCC through Iftar

Interfaith Iftar Planning Committee In a real-life demonstration of cooperation, students from Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and LDS faiths came to the podium to pray during a recent Interfaith Iftar at SLCC. The event, sponsored by Global Connections , Kurdish Student Leadership , I nternational Student Services , and the Emerald Hills Institute , “is a way to promote understanding and cooperation among people of different religions,” said Pridhvi Subgani, president of the Global Connections Club. Annual SLCC-U of U Transfer Summit Held at SLCC to Support Transfer Students

  Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) and the University of Utah (U of U) held their annual Transfer Summit at SLCC on March 22, 2024 to foster the transfer process between the two institutions. SLCC transfer students represent more than 40% of all transfer students to the U of U, and once there, these students graduate at five to six percent higher completion rates than the U’s general transfer population. “We are trying to get these students thinking about the U at the beginning of their SLCC journey, so they have a very clear pathway,” said SLCC President Deneece Huftalin in a video welcome . “From an articulation perspective, we are doing some great things. We have over 50 major-specific articulation agreements in place.” In the last year SLCC has completed or revised agreements for programs such as Nursing, Asian Studies, Language and Cultural Studies, Writing Studies, Hospitality, and Graphic Communication. The Utah Foundation Honors SLCC President Huftalin with Its Annual Insight Award

  The Utah Foundation honored SLCC President Deneece G. Huftalin with the Insight Award today, March 20, for her outstanding service and dedication to students. She was recognized along with Natalie Gochnour, an associate dean in the David Eccles School of Business and director of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah (U of U). Before President of Weber University Brad Mortensen welcomed Huftalin to the podium to receive the award, he shared stories of when they were both earning their PhDs at the University and as colleagues. “She is always finding ways to champion opportunities for student—you feel her passion when she is advocating for students,” said Mortensen.   Awarded annually, the Insight Award recognizes civic leaders who, through a career of service or philanthropic support, have worked with integrity to provide insights in the public policy arena with the aim of improving government.   Huftalin explained that insight suggests that you really dig into

A Pep Talk on Life and Motivation: Gold Medalist Erin Jackson Will Speak to New Graduates at SLCC 2024 Commencement

  Winter Olympic gold medalist Erin Jackson will motivate new graduates at Salt Lake Community College’s upcoming 2024 Commencement on Friday, May 3, at the Maverick Center. As the commencement speaker, Jackson will share where her own grit, motivation and perspective on failure come from, ultimately resulting in becoming the best female 500-meter speedskater in the world. Her 2022 Olympic win in speedskating also made her the first Black woman to win a Winter Olympic gold medal in an individual sport and the first American woman to win an Olympic speed skating gold since 2002.   Jackson grew up in Ocala, Florida competing, and winning, as an inline speed skater when she decided to transition to speedskating on ice at 24 years old. With only four months of experience speedskating, she qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics.   SLCC's First Pitch Line on Newley Renovated Stadium Included SLCC President, Facilities Department Construction and Architect Company . The longest first pitch in West Jordan was marked on Friday, March 8, when Salt Lake Community College President Deneece G. Hutflalin, along with Facility folks, Arch|Nexus Architects and Tom Stuart Construction, threw the ceremonial pitch that marked the new era for the SLCC Bruins. The Bruins hosted its first doubleheader against the College of Southern Idaho after the field's recent renovations. The project consisted of three significant additions to enhance the experience of athletes and patrons. The first was the locker room and athletic training area. The second facility is the concessions building, which includes the ticket office and restrooms. The last building is the press box.
