New Century Scholar on Path to Becoming Physician

From living in London, then a small mountain town above Kamas, Utah and now Salt Lake City, where Carrie White is a student at Salt Lake Community College, the next chapter she writes for herself will likely include being a physician and an advocate for women’s health – in a destination as yet unknown. Originally from England, White, 25, had studied overseas before coming to the United States. She chose SLCC, after a visit to its flagship Taylorsville Redwood Campus, in part for its affordability, but also because it looked like a university yet also had a “community” feel. A first-generation college student, she works part time from home for a financial institution and has had to heavily rely on scholarships, of which she has been awarded several. The most recent and impactful, the New Century Scholarship, was a much welcome addition to her own financial plan. “Even now, it doesn’t really feel real,” White said, reflecting on being told this past month she’d won. An apt reaction, cons

2021 Scholarship Celebration Goes Virtual

How do students, faculty, staff and donors safely celebrate during a pandemic? They come together virtually. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the 2021 Scholarship Celebration event was moved online. However, SLCC still found a way to honor the many scholarship donors, students and community supporters. To create a feeling of celebration, SLCC filmed President Deneece Huftalin, along with seven scholarship students, and emailed the interviews to SLCC’s scholarship donors.   2021 Scholarship Celebration - VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE - YouTube Additionally, hundreds of students submitted videos to their scholarship donors, thanking them for supporting their educational goals. Students shot videos from their homes, cars, jobs and other places they frequently spent their time.   “The Annual Scholarship Celebration is the best day of the year!” said Laura Thomas, development officer. “It’s a day where our hard-working students connect with their gracious donors and celebrate together. Even though the

Free Clinic at Jordan Campus Provides Dental Services to Children in Need

Erika Torres looks on as Dr. William Morrell works on her daughter Clarissa Erika Torres was beyond grateful to have her three children, ages 3, 6 and 16, receive free dental care on a cold, rainy day in March when she brought them to the Give Kids A Smile event at Salt Lake Community College's dental hygiene clinic. Her three-year-old daughter Clarissa dutifully opened her mouth wide as a proud mother took photos on her phone. “This is nice, because sometimes we don’t have enough money to get this for all three children,” Torres said. “I think it’s awesome. This is a great team. They’re doing such a great job, and everyone is so nice and friendly.” The Saturday event at SLCC’s Jordan Campus provided free dental care for 12 children in each of the three two-hour sessions offered throughout the day at the school’s huge clinic and training facility. The company Hu-Friedy donated all of the supplies that dentists and hygienists needed to perform their work as well as lunches for the v

SLCC Stands with Our Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities

Our SLCC community is mourning another violent attack in our nation. The shocking death of eight people, including six women of Asian descent, in Atlanta at the hands of a violent man, is devastating and part of a deeply disturbing trend of increased crime against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. At SLCC, we strongly condemn this most recent hateful act as well as others that have occurred during the past year. We stand with members of our Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, on our campuses and throughout the nation, and grieve with them. Our thoughts are also with the victims of this most recent incident and their families. Since the start of the pandemic, some of SLCC’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students, staff and faculty have experienced elevated fears and anxiety over the uptick in violence directed toward their communities. As the most diverse higher education institution in Utah, we strive to create and maintain a safe and welcoming env

College Celebrates New Student Center at Jordan Campus

The sun was out, and spirits were high as Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) celebrated the new Tim and Brenda Huval Student Center at the Jordan Campus in West Jordan.   A group of students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners cheered as members of the Huval family and SLCC student leaders joined SLCC President Deneece G. Huftalin and 2020-21 SLCC Student Association President Emily Hernandez Alzamora in cutting the ceremonial ribbon of blue and yellow stethoscopes, officially opening the doors to the new Huval Student Center. “This is what happens when you listen to students,” Huftalin said. “Today I’m thrilled that their vision is fulfilled.” More than a decade ago, SLCC student leaders identified a need for a place at the Jordan Campus where students could gather, study and collaborate. That need became a student-funded project resulting in the new 41,000-square-foot center that provides student support services and promotes a sense of community among students, especially

World Plumbing Day - Because Plumbing Improves the World

March 11 is World Plumbing Day. How do we know this? The World Plumbing Council says so. It has fallen on the same day every year since 2010. There are celebrations around the globe. Rock legends like Bob Geldof  have been known to stand on a stage and pontificate on the value of good pipes – it’s that important. To get you in the mood, you can watch a fun video (translation not included) by clicking here . How you decide to celebrate after that is up to you! But maybe you’re wondering, “Can I train to be a plumber at SLCC?” The answer is an emphatic, “Yes!” Here are a few facts you might want to consider around the world of plumbing at SLCC. SLCC has two plumbing programs: Plumber Independent and Plumber/Pipefitter (through the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee). More than 2,500 people are currently working in the plumbing industry in the Salt Lake County area. It’s predicted the industry will continue to grow by 12.3 percent through 2024. Median wage is $25.88/hour. Plumber I

Student Input Felt Throughout New Center

A student-led initiative resulting in a new building specifically for students opened its doors for the first time this semester at Salt Lake Community College’s Jordan Campus. The $17 million, 41,000-square-foot Tim and Brenda Huval Student Center now serves as a dynamic hub for SLCC students, supporting their success in a variety of ways. Shannon McWilliams, interim assistant vice president for SLCC Student Services, says students were a “driving force” toward making the new building a reality by using their collective voice and influence to make a change while also gaining hands-on experience. “The conversation of needing a student-friendly gathering space at the Jordan Campus started over ten years ago,” McWilliams says. “Our student leaders have been diligent in bringing this idea to fruition.” One of those students involved in the early planning of the building was Aynoa Rincon, who now works for SLCC’s Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. Rincon was president of the

Library Honoring Provost Sanders Offers Opportunity for ‘Racial Reconciliation’

When Dr. Clifton Sanders is asked about what it means to have a library at Salt Lake Community College named after him, he connects to a story about a life-altering realization his mother, Mary Branch, had while he was in college. The Dr. Clifton G. Sanders Racial Justice and Black Liberation Library, located at SLCC’s South City Campus, opened this semester and is available to students, staff and faculty. It’s a perfect fit, naming a library after someone who collects books and is a ravenous reader. Dr. Sanders says a love of books is a legacy passed on from his grandmother’s generation and then to him and his siblings through a mother he describes as an avid reader and a longtime champion for children, community, family and the downtrodden. He and Mary talk a lot, and when he was an undergrad studying chemistry at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, she called her son to talk about a self-discovery she made at her new job as a case worker with the Baltimore County Department
