World Plumbing Day - Because Plumbing Improves the World

March 11 is World Plumbing Day. How do we know this? The World Plumbing Council says so. It has fallen on the same day every year since 2010. There are celebrations around the globe. Rock legends like Bob Geldof have been known to stand on a stage and pontificate on the value of good pipes – it’s that important. To get you in the mood, you can watch a fun video (translation not included) by clicking here. How you decide to celebrate after that is up to you!

But maybe you’re wondering, “Can I train to be a plumber at SLCC?” The answer is an emphatic, “Yes!”

Here are a few facts you might want to consider around the world of plumbing at SLCC.

  • SLCC has two plumbing programs: Plumber Independent and Plumber/Pipefitter (through the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee).

  • More than 2,500 people are currently working in the plumbing industry in the Salt Lake County area.

  • It’s predicted the industry will continue to grow by 12.3 percent through 2024.

  • Median wage is $25.88/hour.

Plumber Independent training:

  1. You work during the day for a company as a licensed apprentice.
  2. The company through DOPL provides your license.
  3. You attend class in the evening.
  4. You earn five credit hours for each class.
  5. Apprentices need to complete 2,000 hours of work per year plus education for four years in order to sit for the state journeyman test.
  6. If school isn’t your thing, then you’ll need 2,000 work hours per year for eight years to take the journeyman test.
  7. In this program, students are given half off their tuition for all apprenticeship classes, including your required general education courses.

HB 261 and HB 257 Frequently Asked Questions

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students: The Utah Legislature recently passed two bills that significantly impact higher education:  HB 261  Equal Opportunity Initiatives and HB  257  Sex-Based Designations for Privacy, Anti-Bullying, and Women’s Opportunities. Salt Lake Community College is deeply committed to our students, faculty, and staff. We strive to be a place where all are welcomed and respected. While there are many unknowns about the ultimate effect these bills will have on some student and staff support programs, be assured that SLCC will maintain an environment where all can find success and feel a sense of belonging. In the coming months, college leadership will work to gain clarity and determine the changes necessary for legislative compliance. We will also share this information as it becomes available.  We realize that during this time, some in our college community may feel unsettled and stressed.
