Unveiling of the Utah Women Mural at South City Campus

Salt Lake Community College will host the formal unveiling of the  Utah Women 2020 Mural  at its South City Campus on March 6. The 1,000-square-foot-mural mural features more than 350 women, many of whom have made their mark on the Beehive State.   Pop artist and soft-sculpture pioneer Jann Haworth shepherded the project since its inception and, partnering with collage artist Liberty Blake, have painstakingly assembled nearly 300 life-size stenciled portraits to create this living, breathing testament to community and to the remarkable legacy of Utah women throughout history. Nearly 300 individuals were involved in the creation of this monumental tribute to Utah Women. There are two versions of this mural, both of which are on view in Salt Lake City. The first iteration was commissioned by Zions Bank Advisory Board Chairman Scott Anderson, who tapped Haworth to develop a work to commemorate Utah women on the 100-year anniversary of women’s suffrage and the 150...

National Video Game Day: SLCC's Esports Program

SLCC esports student Lehi Quiroz who took second place nationally. National Video Game Day is on July 8 and it's a perfect time to learn about Salt Lake Community College's esports program and the world of competitive gaming. What is esports? Esports, short for electronic sports, refers to competitive video gaming organized and played at a professional level. It involves teams or individuals competing against each other in popular video games such as Halo, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. Just like traditional sports, esports requires skill, strategy, teamwork and quick reflexes. The esports program at SLCC began in the fall of 2020, but has picked up steam this last year, and now competes with other colleges through the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) and Generation Esports. Each semester, much like any traditional sport, there are matches and playoffs, where teams and individuals compete.  “I never thought I had the skills to make it as a pla...

Dance Concert Planned for Live Grand Theatre Audience

Last spring the Salt Lake Community College Dance Company was just a few weeks from performing their annual spring concert when the pandemic forced the cancellation of events across the country. Now, with COVID-19 infections at all-time highs in Utah, the group thinks it has figured out a way to perform in front of a live audience. There are two concerts planned for Nov. 20 and 21, 7-8 p.m. both nights. Students, staff and faculty at SLCC are encouraged to bring Bruin Food Pantry donations in lieu of an entry fee. The cost to the general public will be $5 through the Grand Theatre Box Office , which is offering contactless digital ticketing. Audience members will experience socially distanced seating inside the theatre. Congregating in groups will be discouraged by ushers. Contact tracing efforts will be in place. If they can pull it off, the SLCC Dance Company fall concert later this month will be the first live performance at SLCC’s Grand Theatre since it closed in March due to the p...

Black Box Pulls Off Production of The Seagull

Jason Sin Jason Sin, dressed in a period costume and wearing a mask over his mouth and nose, comes through the front door and on to the porch with a welcoming message as he collects his waiting audience. Everyone proceeds inside to watch a group of student actors perform the first part of Russian playwright Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull. In the way that it is performed – with several safety precautions in place to prevent the possible spread of COVID-19 – the play is unlike anything Salt Lake Community College’s Black Box Theatre group has ever done. Then again, these are unusual times – and out of necessity and ingenuity is born an unusual production. The first of three viewing spaces for the audience is the large main room of The Clubhouse, built in 1913 for its former occupants, the Ladies Literary Club. The small, socially distanced audience is then invited to watch acts two and three in separate rooms throughout the vintage venue, located at 850 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City. T...

Basketball Ended Abruptly: And A New Way of Life Began

Hazel Fui (#31) and the SLCC women's basketball team celebrate the Region 18 title in March. It was a Thursday afternoon. There was ice cream. People gave speeches. And then basketball players on the men’s and women’s teams for Salt Lake Community College found out within the same hour of their big sendoff to the NJCAA National Tournament – their paths toward a championship would be postponed. There’s a pandemic. Go home, they were told, and enjoy your spring break. We’ll regroup in a week. They scattered, all over the country and to places half a world away. What came next, in the middle of that break, crushed their spirits – there would be no tournament. That’s it. Season over. Oh, and stay where you are – and stay safe, they were told. “Everything happened so abruptly at the end of the season,” Ashley Scoggin says from her home in Dallas, Oregon, a city of about 15,000 near Salem. She left her favorite bed, a lot of clothes and other belongings at a house she shar...

For her efforts, she was chosen for the NJCAA Appreciation Award, given to individuals at the discretion of the current NJCAA President & CEO to recognize superior contributions to the Association. Carr said earning the award is extremely gratifying and humbling. "I loved working with the NJCAA and helping to make things better," she said. "The NJCAA is a great organization and I am so honored to be receiving this award.  I am extremely surprised and honored to be receiving this award as those who have previously received this award are NJCAA icons whom I greatly respect."
