**Please note that the following opportunities are available to all faculty and staff.** LinkedIn Learning — Recommended Course of the Week Overcoming Imposter Syndrome   Those who experience imposter syndrome often believe they are inferior to others or have faked their way into positions despite impressive accomplishments. Up to 70% of both women and men, especially high-achievers, experience imposter syndrome at some point in their career. This false belief system leads some people to self-sabotage, turn down career and growth opportunities, and limit their own career trajectories. Join instructor Carolyn Goerner as she explains the different types of imposter syndrome and shares constructive ways you can begin to overcome this negative thought cycle. Signs of Life: Lights on at South City Campus

Channing Lowe takes film production students through the paces of lighting a scene. The bright soundstage lights go off. One lighting unit shines through a window at a human subject sitting at a desk inside of a set that looks like an office . An orange gel covers a second light to warm up the tone of the scene. A third incandescent source on the desk is dimmed. A white bounce board is strategically placed to direct light. At last, there is a certain mood in the room – one created by careful manipulation of light. With a few more nuanced adjustments, Channing Lowe’s lesson for beginning film production students about lighting a scene is at its apex.   The back and forth between students and professor during this process is muffled behind masks, which are required these days during a global pandemic to pull off in-person labs at Salt Lake Community College throughout the summer at different SLCC campuses. At its Westpointe Campus, SLCC welding and truck driving students don masks and

Scholarship Recipient, Rising EMT Star Cheers on Charity Golf Tournament Benefiting Students

The Abraham Markosian Scholarship Endowment helped get Jonah Burton where he is today – a 19-year-old emergency medical technician who loves his job and is a scholarship recipient on track toward earning an associate’s degree with plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in emergency management.   So, when Jonah, currently a student at Salt Lake Community College, was asked to help promote an annual golf tournament that raises scholarship funds at SLCC, he was all in. “I would not be where I am right now without the scholarship I was provided,” Jonah says.   Planning is currently underway for the annual Gail Miller Utah Leadership Cup on Sept. 14. Played each year at the Hidden Valley Country Club, it has become one of the premier golf tournaments in Utah and continues to grow in popularity. As the global pandemic continues, organizers of the tournament will comply with all state and federal requirements in order to keep golfers and volunteers safe and comfortable. Just as the pandemic ha

Volleyball Team Recognized by AVCA for Academic Excellence

August, 2019 photo of the SLCC Volleyball team The Salt Lake Community College volleyball program was recognized academically for academic success by the AVCA this week. The AVCA award honors teams who have matched their dedication to the sport of volleyball with excellence in the classroom. In a release from the NJCAA last week, the Bruins were recognized as a Top-10 team nationally in academics, finishing the year with a program GPA of 3.65. SLCC also had the highest team GPA in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. SLCC coach  Sue Dulaney  said academic success is a primary focus of her program. "Our program has always valued academics and we are very proud of our all of players as it took all 15 to accomplish this task," she said. "This marks the highest GPA by any volleyball program at SLCC. Our coaching staff has worked hard to shift our culture to a growth mindset; so far the results are inspiring and encouraging, we are ready to begin a new year." President Huftalin Shares Memories of Upcoming Gail Miller Golf Event, Scholarship Fundraiser

Gail Miller (l-r), Utah Jazz Bear and Deneece Huftalin It’s easy to hear the smile over the phone in Deneece Huftalin’s voice as she reminisces about past Gail Miller Utah Leadership Cup tournaments. After all, she’s recalling days when her main job description is to ride around in a golf cart on a picturesque course with the Gail Miller, talk with ambitious college students and pose with donors eager to have their photos taken with her and Gail.   Beats a hard day at the office.   It’s all in an effort to raise scholarship money for students at Salt Lake Community College, where Dr. Huftalin is president and sometimes chief fundraiser, like on that day each year at Hidden Valley Country Club in Sandy. “Gail and I used to drive around to all of the holes and watch people tee off, thanking them for helping,” Deneece says. “They go on about the students and the college and thank us for letting them come out and be a part of a fun day.” Planning is currently underway for a Sept. 14 tour
