The Salt Lake Community College volleyball program was recognized academically for academic success by the AVCA this week.

The AVCA award honors teams who have matched their dedication to the sport of volleyball with excellence in the classroom. In a release from the NJCAA last week, the Bruins were recognized as a Top-10 team nationally in academics, finishing the year with a program GPA of 3.65. SLCC also had the highest team GPA in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

SLCC coach Sue Dulaney said academic success is a primary focus of her program.

"Our program has always valued academics and we are very proud of our all of players as it took all 15 to accomplish this task," she said. "This marks the highest GPA by any volleyball program at SLCC. Our coaching staff has worked hard to shift our culture to a growth mindset; so far the results are inspiring and encouraging, we are ready to begin a new year."

Individually, Holland Vande Merwe finished the year with a 4.0 GPA, earning a spot on the NJCAA All-Academic First-Team; Vande Merwe will be playing at Westminster this fall. Bruna Correa, who will be playing at the University of San Francisco, finished with an NJCAA All-Academic Second-Team nod due to a 3.81 GPA. Other SLCC players who earned Second-Team All-Academic honors included: Sammi Johnston (3.98), Jessa Gines (3.96), and Kenadee Christensen (3.94).

SLCC had two players named to the NJCAA All-Academic Third-Team, with New Hampshire commit Arianne Pola finishing with a 3.71 GPA. Rachael Warren posted a 3.68 GPA.
