What is American Heart Month? Discover Ways to Promote Your Heart Health

February 2022 marked the fifty-seventh consecutive American Heart Month. President Lyndon B. Johnson introduced the proclamation in 1963 after receiving a heart disease diagnosis and learning that over one-half of Americans received heart disease diagnoses. This newfound knowledge led him to introduce the proclamation to educate Americans on preventive care. To this day, the month acts as a time encouraging people to focus on their cardiovascular health and emphasizes preventive practices. Although February is on its way out, it’s never too late to establish preventive health practices. Emily Allen , a health promotion specialist for Salt Lake Community College’s Center for Health and Counseling (CHC), shares ways students can integrate heart-healthy practices into their day-to-day lives. Emily says the main aspects of heart health include: food, regular exercise, avoiding smoking and secondhand smoke , and good dental hygiene , including daily flossing. In addition, Emily highlights

FAQ About Student Vaccination/Boosters Requirement

After requiring students to be vaccinated for COVID-19 for Spring Semester, will SLCC require vaccinations or booster vaccinations for upcoming semesters?   In order to register for the summer and fall 2022 semesters, SLCC students must be up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters. Students who were initially vaccinated with Pfizer or Moderna more than six months ago or with Johnson & Johnson more than two months ago must receive a booster in order to be considered fully vaccinated. How will SLCC know I am vaccinated or boosted?   The college developed a system that will be part of our online registration module. In order to register for classes, students will need to upload proof of vaccination. Until they do, their account will display a registration hold. Once proof is uploaded, the hold is lifted.  What if I can’t get vaccinated or boosted or if I choose not to?   Utah law requires the college to offer vaccination exemptions to students. Students who canno

Are you Hispanic or Latina/o/x/e?

Are you Hispanic or Latina/o/x/e? Have you ever wondered why you see that question on applications, including our admissions application? Here's why:  Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is an emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), which means that we are nearing the 25% full-time undergraduate enrollment threshold of students who identified as "Hispanic" in their admissions application. As we work towards becoming an HSI, we are revamping approaches to student services inside and outside the classroom to support this growing community in Salt Lake.    Every day at the college, on the news, and on social media, we encounter the terms "Hispanic," "Latino," "Latina," and most recently, the terms "Latinx" and "Latine." However, what is the difference between the terms? Here is an introduction:   Hispanic  is a term that the U.S. Census introduced in the 1980s to capture a demographic with similar cultural characteri

SLCC Stands with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)

As recently reported in the news, more than a dozen of our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were subject to threats of violence and intimidation yesterday. As Utah’s most diverse higher education institution, Salt Lake Community College stands in solidarity with these colleges and universities and condemns these cowardly and hateful acts in the strongest possible terms.  As noted by SLCC Provost Dr. Clifton Sanders, these threats are, without a doubt, “assaults on the expression of Black excellence, perseverance and hope in the liberating promise of higher education.” Colleges and universities are places that should always be safe and welcoming and where all are valued and respected. There is no place for racial hate or violence on any campus anywhere. We are truly disheartened and disappointed by these threats and recognize that these actions are an affront to us all.    I encourage everyone in the SLCC community to show each other extra kindness, empathy
