On December 12, Salt Lake Community College unveiled and dedicated a new statue on campus of the renowned inventor, Nikola Tesla. The statue, crafted by local artist Stan Watts and Russian sculptor Andrey Sledkov , is the first of many by the artists that will be placed throughout the United States and Europe, and the only one to be placed at a college institution.  “In celebration of Tesla's vision and influence on today's technology, we thought it was so important that it be right at the entrance of our science, math and engineering building to help our students see what's possible in the world of engineering,” said President Deneece Huftalin during the unveiling.  The new Nikola Tesla statue displayed at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. When Jenni Orr’s daughter needed surgery at the tender age of four, she experienced just how much Primary Children’s Hospital (PCH) would come to mean in her life. “Our doctors were amazing,” says Orr, a mother of three. “The nurses, staff – everyone – were so good to her and kind. It really helped to alleviate a lot of our worries.” This past fall, Orr, 33, a chemistry student at Salt Lake Community College, saw just how much Primary Children’s means to Utah when she took the lead on a fundraising project for her club American Chemical Society Student Affiliate (ACS). The group recently finished their holiday service project with a fundraiser for PCH that raised $9,700 during the non-profit hospital’s annual Festival of Trees, which began 49 years ago. The previous year’s festival raised $2.8 million for children at PCH. ...

Instructor Linda Jemmett uses props to convey concepts during her Biology 1610 workshops. Without successfully completing Biology 1610, Rochelle Cheesman, 39, might not reach her goal of becoming a radiology technician. Good news, though – she passed, thanks in part to a new workshop at Salt Lake Community College. Flashback to this past summer, when Cheesman took the workshop given by Biology 1610 instructor Linda Jemmett, who has an acute awareness of the pivotal role her class has in the varied academic paths of many. On a hot day in July, Jemmett told her students in a workshop on the Taylorsville Redwood Campus not to have a “migraine” over the Hardy-Weinberg principle she was teaching at the time. The principle, with its relatively complex equation, can help predict the probability of certain traits or abnormalities in children and aid in the process of genetic counseling. Muscles burning. Sounds of bicycle wheels spinning faster and faster. Sweat dripping. Grimacing faces. Someone yelling to push harder. And then someone pricks their ears. Samples the resulting blood with a small device. Blots the excess with a tissue. Records the results. It’s all part of a recent lactate threshold testing round with U.S. Speedskating (USS) athletes, hoping to make the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. Those athletes are also students at Salt Lake Community College, which is the official higher education provider for USS. As part of an agreement with USS, SLCC is an exercise science performance provider for the skaters.
