Imagine: You register for a class to learn about a state’s rich history. Then, you and your classmates travel to and experience the state’s distinctive cuisine, vibrant music and ecological wonders—all while gaining credit at Salt Lake Community College. For the first time at SLCC, a group of students did just that; they traveled to Louisiana on July 10-17 for the domestic study trip portion of DSD 2900: A Taste of Louisiana . The domestic study designation (DSD 2900) was recently developed by Professor Jeff Zealley, who taught the course, and Engaged Learning Director Lucy Smith. The new designation offers experiential learning, the process of learning by doing while remaining interdisciplinary. Nearly all students who registered for A Taste of Louisiana hailed from different areas of study. Yet, they intended to apply what they learned in the class to their respective fields. Salt Lake Community College students traveled to New Orleans on July 10 for the College’s first interdisciplinary domestic study trip, A Taste of Louisiana. Get engaged with SLCC’s Study Abroad and Domestic Study programs in 2020!   Through integrating classroom and community-based experiential learning, you will gain an understanding of the diverse global environments and cultures around us. Gain an understanding and appreciation of human differences, develop language skills, dive into service, undergraduate research or study global literature through international and domestic travel. Salt Lake Community College students are invited to study abroad this summer in Ghana. This multi-faceted study abroad course seeks to emphasize the influences that time, geographic location, and culture - the “power of place” - have on which stories get told, how they get told and who gets to tell them. While this is, in part, a literature course that surveys different genres of literatures, its foundation is exploring and understanding the integral role that writing plays in individual and community identity formation. Part of the trip will be dedicated to service by engaging with the local community on an afforestation project intended to help rebuild the ecosystem and provide economic opportunities through sustainable farming to the surrounding communities.
