Students Experience a Taste of Louisiana Through New Domestic Study Class

Imagine: You register for a class to learn about a state’s rich history. Then, you and your classmates travel to and experience the state’s distinctive cuisine, vibrant music and ecological wonders—all while gaining credit at Salt Lake Community College. For the first time at SLCC, a group of students did just that; they traveled to Louisiana on July 10-17 for the domestic study trip portion of DSD 2900: A Taste of Louisiana . The domestic study designation (DSD 2900) was recently developed by Professor Jeff Zealley, who taught the course, and Engaged Learning Director Lucy Smith. The new designation offers experiential learning, the process of learning by doing while remaining interdisciplinary. Nearly all students who registered for A Taste of Louisiana hailed from different areas of study. Yet, they intended to apply what they learned in the class to their respective fields. Brisa Aguirre Jurado, who is studying animation at SLCC, registered for the class because she enjoys l...

Hire a Veteran Day: Find Your Future at SLCC's Career Services

July 25 marked National Hire a Veteran Day, a period that raises awareness of employment for transitioning U.S. servicemembers and veterans after completing their military service. Veterans bring competitive skills to jobs, like dedication, teamwork and good communication; yet, finding and competing for civilian positions can be challenging for transitioning veterans. Many may not know of Salt Lake Community College’s longstanding history with student veterans. In 1948, the Salt Lake Area Vocational School expanded its educational programs and resources financed by the Montgomery GI Bill. Today, SLCC serves approximately 1,100 veterans and is ranked 16 on the Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges 2020 as a two-year college. Career Services is the perfect one-stop-shop out of the many job readiness resources Salt Lake Community College offers student veterans. Career coaches can meet with students and help them map their professional needs. Career Coach Dan Hooten says an i...

Common Registration Questions Related to SLCC’s Vaccine Requirement

As registration has opened for Spring Semester, a few questions have come up regarding  SLCC’s student vaccination requirement.   What if I am not fully vaccinated, but I’m in the process of getting this done?    You can upload your current vaccination card and when you are fully vaccinated, you can update your vaccination card by going to the Campus Life tab in MySLCC and under Health & Wellness select COVID submit vaccination status link.    Do you have more information on exemptions?     Examples of exemptions include:  Personal – Any personal belief that would prevent you from being vaccinated (i.e. philosophical, scientific, moral or personal views on vaccinations).   Religious – Any religious belief that would prevent you from being vaccinated. Some people believe that vaccinations conflict with a genuine and sincere religious belief and that the belief is in fact religious, and not based merely on philosophical, scientific, mo...

COVID-19 Vaccination Exemptions

For the health and safety of our community, SLCC is requiring all students get vaccinated for COVID-19 before they can register for Spring semester. However,   Utah law requires the college to offer exemptions for medical, religious or personal reasons . While we want to see as many students as possible get vaccinated, we know that not everyone is able to do so. If you fall into this category, here is some information you need to know about claiming an exemption:     For Spring semester, nearly all students will have an automatic hold placed on their registration. To remove the hold, you must upload either proof of vaccination or declare an exemption.  Both the upload and exemption options are available through the registration module. If you choose to claim an exemption, scroll down to that section and follow the instructions. You will be asked to indicate if your exemption request is for medical, religious or personal reasons.  Once an exemption has been decla...

SLCC Student COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement – Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is SLCC implementing a vaccine requirement? A. State leaders recently granted Utah System of Higher Education institutions more flexibility in decisions regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements for Spring semester 2022. The surge in cases due to the Delta variant has put a huge strain on Utah’s health care system, and the college can play an important role in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 by requiring students to get vaccinated. Q. Why are SLCC employees not subject to the vaccination requirement? A. The college is currently waiting for a legal review and authority to consider a vaccination requirement for SLCC employees. Updates will be provided as the college receives information on this matter. Q. Why is SLCC implementing a vaccine requirement rather than a mask mandate? A. Utah law only allows state and local health departments, with approval from the relevant county legislative bodies, to issue mask mandates. With that said, SLCC encourages every...

President’s Message: COVID-19 Vaccine Update

Hello Bruins!  We hope this message finds you well and that your semester is off to a great start.  As you are aware, state leaders recently granted Utah System of Higher Education institutions more flexibility in decisions regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements for spring semester.  Throughout the pandemic, we have been mindful of the health of our college and our local community and as such, we’ve implemented many precautions related to COVID-19.  Given the increasing number of cases due to the Delta variant, we have made a decision to adopt a vaccination requirement for all SLCC students beginning Spring Semester 2022. We are requiring that students be vaccinated before registering for spring classes.  To support students in meeting this requirement, we are offering several vaccination clinics on campus. These clinics are free and open to everyone.  Details on the vaccination clinics can be found on our blog . We encourage you to get vaccinated...

COVID-19 Testing for Students at SLCC

The following email sent to all current SLCC students was updated Dec. 4, 2020.  Dear SLCC Students,   I am asking for your help. It’s no secret that Utah is in crisis due to the massive, recent surge in COVID-19 cases. This surge is creating a dire situation for our hospitals where their ability to provide emergency treatment or intensive care is becoming severely limited.    As a student at Salt Lake Community College, you have an extraordinary opportunity to help reverse this troubling trend and have a real and positive impact on the health of all Utahns. Since many of you are already coming to campus, and so many in your age group are asymptomatic, SLCC is joining other Utah colleges and universities to test all college students attending in-person classes this fall. Here’s how it will work: Students who are 18 or older and who attend at least one in-person class this semester are being offered tests, which should be done every 14 days.  Testing will take pl...

SLCC Lowers Student Fees for Fall Semester

Good news, Bruins! To help our students during this unprecedented time, SLCC is reducing its fees by 15 percent for Fall 2020 Semester for students taking six or more credit hours. This reduction equates to a savings of $40 per student. The lingering COVID-19 pandemic has had an ongoing economic impact on many of our students. Last spring, we moved quickly to reduce educational costs by making the decision to defer a scheduled 1.5 percent tuition increase until spring 2021. At that time, we also began waiving the $15 co-pay for visits to the SLCC Center for Health and Counseling. This fee will continue to be waived throughout fall semester. We’re excited for a new semester and we’re looking forward to seeing our students on campus. Together, we’ll get through this challenging time.

Signs of Life: Lights on at South City Campus

Channing Lowe takes film production students through the paces of lighting a scene. The bright soundstage lights go off. One lighting unit shines through a window at a human subject sitting at a desk inside of a set that looks like an office . An orange gel covers a second light to warm up the tone of the scene. A third incandescent source on the desk is dimmed. A white bounce board is strategically placed to direct light. At last, there is a certain mood in the room – one created by careful manipulation of light. With a few more nuanced adjustments, Channing Lowe’s lesson for beginning film production students about lighting a scene is at its apex.   The back and forth between students and professor during this process is muffled behind masks, which are required these days during a global pandemic to pull off in-person labs at Salt Lake Community College throughout the summer at different SLCC campuses. At its Westpointe Campus, SLCC welding and truck driving students don masks ...

President Huftalin Shares Memories of Upcoming Gail Miller Golf Event, Scholarship Fundraiser

Gail Miller (l-r), Utah Jazz Bear and Deneece Huftalin It’s easy to hear the smile over the phone in Deneece Huftalin’s voice as she reminisces about past Gail Miller Utah Leadership Cup tournaments. After all, she’s recalling days when her main job description is to ride around in a golf cart on a picturesque course with the Gail Miller, talk with ambitious college students and pose with donors eager to have their photos taken with her and Gail.   Beats a hard day at the office.   It’s all in an effort to raise scholarship money for students at Salt Lake Community College, where Dr. Huftalin is president and sometimes chief fundraiser, like on that day each year at Hidden Valley Country Club in Sandy. “Gail and I used to drive around to all of the holes and watch people tee off, thanking them for helping,” Deneece says. “They go on about the students and the college and thank us for letting them come out and be a part of a fun day.” Planning is currently underway for a Sept...
