Softball Wins Region 18, Heads to Arizona for Nationals

In the course of a season in college sports there is an ebb-and-flow, and occasionally there is an exclamation point that helps define a season. Thursday was that exclamation point for the No. 1 Salt Lake Community College softball team , with the Bruins earning an 8-0 win over the College of Southern Idaho to claim the Region 18 tournament and advance to the upcoming NJCAA National Tournament in Arizona. SLCC is now 51-2 overall with the win and will head into the national tournament as the likely top seed.  The Bruins posted a pair of runs early, with  Rylee Harris-Thorpe  hitting an RBI double to get Salt Lake on the board in the first inning. SLCC added five runs in the third inning, thanks to a  Kaytlyn Cripps  two-run double that upped the Bruin lead to 7-0 after three innings. Service-Learning: 500 Acts of Kindness

The learning and growing opportunities for 500 children this summer got a boost from communications students at Salt Lake Community College as part of a service-learning project. Susan Knott’s class COMM 1020, Principles of Public Speaking, culminated in a service project that involved students preparing 500 donated backpacks full of supplies for children at two elementary schools and preschools. The project was supported by SLCC’s Engaged Learning Office and grant funding of $1,500. Below is a project synopsis written by Susan Knott that details all that went into her students’ efforts to help children who live in communities served by SLCC. Congratulations to Susan and her students on a successful project! As a designated service-learning course, COMM 1020, Principles of Public Speaking includes preparing and delivering speeches around the JEDI themes of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and a community service project. COVID Testing Required for Summer Student Re-entry

We’re so excited students will be returning to in-person classes and labs this summer at all Salt Lake Community College campuses. We want to ensure that the college continues to provide the safest learning environment possible as the COVID-19 pandemic extends into its second year. We have been fortunate that SLCC’s positivity rate has been low since returning to our classrooms. Part of the reason for that low rate has been our vigilance in testing students, staff and faculty and catching cases and isolating them before they turn into an outbreak on campus. On a related note, SLCC will continue, until further notice, to enforce staying masked while indoors with others or when in close proximity to people outdoors on all of its campuses. We have been asked to continue our testing efforts at least into the summer term. That means any student attending at least one in-person class per week on any SLCC campus must be tested early in the semester. The college will be doing focused testing

First-ever Virtual Fashion Show Coming to SLCC

The Salt Lake Community College Fashion Institute closes every spring semester by celebrating the talent and hard work of its senior Fashion Design students with a runway show. However, this hugely popular and successful in-person event was cancelled in 2020, due to the pandemic. Determined to give this year’s current crop of incredible designers an opportunity to show off their work, the college is hosting a first-ever virtual fashion show. The show dubbed Runway, billed as a virtual watch party with a digital runway and fashion films, will be held May 21 and again on May 26. “Cancelling last year’s show, and still unable to host an in-person event this year, left many student designers disappointed,” says Mojdeh Sakaki, program manager of SLCC’s Fashion Institute and Interior Design program. “I couldn’t let the pandemic take away the joy of the much-anticipated Senior Students Fashion show. So, I requested a grant from the SLCC Arts & Cultural Events committee, and their genero
