SLCC Recognizes Rising Star Alumni, Tyler Jeppsen

  PRESS RELEASE Tyler Jeppsen has been selected as the winner of Salt Lake Community College's (SLCC) 2023 Rising Star Award. The award recognizes SLCC alumni who have made a profound and positive impact in their communities and beyond, and who have graduated from the college within the last seven years.    The Jeppsen name may sound familiar.   SLCC Career Services clothing boutique located in the Student Center. A student recently came into Career Services looking for help. She was applying for a customer service job but had no professional attire. She didn't know what to wear to her first interview.  Career coaches took her to a room full of dresses, suits and shoes, helped her pick out what to wear and prepared her for what she would need to be successful in a job interview. It all started with the clothes and moved into a mock interview that helped her gain the confidence to get the job.  “We have first-generation students and refugee students that come in for their first job in the US, which is a lot different than back in their country. We help them with whatever barriers that they may have and help ease those fears they may have with trying to find employment because it can be intimidating,” says Dan Hooten, one of the career coaches at Career Services. SLCC Welcomes First Minority Business Center Director

  PRESS RELEASE Salt Lake Community College recently named Sidni Shorter, PsyD, as its first Minority Business Center (MBC) Director. The center is the result of a Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) grant awarded to SLCC last fall by the U.S. Department of Commerce to assist minority-owned businesses. The center will be located at SLCC’s Miller Campus as a division of The Mill Entrepreneurship Center.   “Sidni’s impressive professional background includes CEO of the Utah Black Chamber, small business owner, partner relations and community development expert, as well as extensive work with non-profits and federal grant initiatives,” said Beth Colosimo, executive director for The Mill. “I can’t think of a better person to take this new opportunity and serve minority business owners across the state, on behalf of the college.” Before moving to Utah, Shorter acquired and ran the finance and accounting firm Execute Now! in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Healing Out Loud: A Mental Health Film Contest

Mental health issues are something that many people suffer in silence due to the stigma that carries. Unfortunately, some people can get so overwhelmed that it starts to affect them physically and can upset their social, professional and educational life. In an effort to remove the stigma and create a more open and honest conversation about mental health, the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE), in partnership with Huntsman’s Mental Health Institute at the University of Utah, has launched Healing Out Loud: A Mental Health Film Contest .  The purpose of the contest is to get people ages 15-30 to use their creativity and speak out about mental health in a safe space. Participants can enter a short video of 30 seconds or a longer film of up to 5 minutes. Entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2023. Winners will be announced in early May. DaSheek Akwenye Director of Center for Health and Counseling Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is pleased to announce DaSheek Akwenye as the new Director of the Center for Health and Counseling (CHC). DaSheek, along with the staff of CHC, will continue to provide resources for SLCC students to help them succeed in every aspect in and out of the classroom. His university experience inspired him to help provide a safe space for students, and he wants students to know that “regardless of what they are going through, we can work through it,” says DaSheek. DaSheek, originally from Namibia, came to Utah in 2002 as an international student-athlete at Utah Valley State College (USVC), now Utah Valley University (UVU). After completing his Associate Degree from UVSC, he transferred to Utah State University (USU), where he obtained his undergrad and graduate degrees. SLCC Welcomes Its First Hispanic Serving Initiatives Director

  PRESS RELEASE Salt Lake Community College recently named Tranquilino “Kino” Hurtado as its first Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives Director. As an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution (eHSI), Hurtado will play an important role at SLCC, coordinating HSI efforts across the college involving academic and nonacademic programs to prepare for this federal designation.      “Kino’s work experience and his PhD pursuit will help keep the college current in best practices for becoming an HSI and continuing to build equitable and inclusive practices in higher education for all,” said Juone Kadiri, PhD, vice president for  Institutional Equity, Inclusion and Transformation at SLCC . “We’re really excited to have him on our team in this new role.”     Before moving to Utah to pursue his PhD at the University of Utah, Hurtado had earned his master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling and was the Career Services Director for New Mexico Highlands University.
