Five FAFSA Facts

A student must fulfill a few key elements before they step foot in the institution on their first day of school, such as application, registering for classes, and one may argue filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA is the single most crucial application a student can apply when attending Salt Lake Community College or any other institution of higher education to get money for college. Here are the top five reasons why students should apply for FAFSA.

One: FAFSA is the key to federal money geared towards college students. For students to access federal financial aid, they must submit a FAFSA application to help them qualify for grants, scholarships, and loans.

Two: Be mindful of deadlines. The window to apply for FAFSA is quite generous. However, it is essential to apply as soon as possible. FAFSA opens on Nov. 1.

Three: The FAFSA application is extensive—but there is help. SLCC’s Financial Aid office offers FAFSA application assistance to students both virtually and in person. Visit the Financial Aid office website to schedule an appointment for assistance.

Four: Students must reapply for FAFSA each year. The application is based on income; since it varies from year to year, students must apply yearly to qualify and receive funds. When federal grants fall short, SLCC Promise helps students pay for their education by covering the cost of tuition and fees.

Five: There are many reasons a student may not qualify for FAFSA–students need to be U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens to fill out the application. However, students are encouraged to speak with a Financial Aid advisor before figuring out the best situation, as no student’s situation is like another one.

Student’s benefiting from FAFSA is under a contingency contract, which means they will remain in good academic standing and other criteria that students must understand. FAFSA application is a complex process and can be intimidating. However, the SLCC Financial Aid office supports students throughout the process. Once the application is submitted, all Financial Aid correspondence will be sent through student email. Check the correct place for any additional information needed to ensure all funds can be accessed.
