Rec Centers Open to Students

Tired of working out in your basement or living room? Miss the machines at your favorite gym? Well, those days are over – with, of course, a dose of “new normal” mixed in.   Students are being welcomed back to the rec centers at the LAC on the Taylorsville Redwood Campus and at South City Campus starting June 1.   Hours will be as follows:   ·       Taylorsville: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. ·       South City: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.   NOTE: Students must reserve their spot the morning of their workout by calling 801-957-3801 (Taylorsville) or 801-957-3013 (South City). The last appointment in both locations is at 4 p.m.   Faculty and staff at SLCC are still being asked to make reservations for their workouts online by clicking here  (South City) and here (Taylorsville).   Everyone is asked to follow current social distancing procedures:   1.      Maintain 10 feet of distance between patrons in workout areas. 2.      Use cleaning spray and paper towel to clean all equipment that you touch. 3.      Loc

Commencement 2020: SLCCSA President Reflects, Looks Forward

Mason Bancroft is a first-generation college student. He comes from a low-income family. Grit. Fire. Passion. They are characteristics he has leaned on to get back up when knocked down.   Family. Friends. Mentors. Teachers. They are the ones who, through empathy and caring, have helped Mason when the path was cluttered with obstacles. And he credits them now with helping him reach his first of many post-secondary educational goals.   Mason is graduating from Salt Lake Community College with an associate’s degree in psychology. He’s transferring to the University of Utah this fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree, and then it’s onward toward double PhD degrees in clinical mental health counseling and sports psychology. Drive. Determination. Ambition. Also, words that describe Mason.   On June 26, SLCC graduates, staff, faculty and thousands who would have otherwise filled the Maverik Center in early May for the college’s traditional commencement ceremony will instead go online to hear Maso

Reopening SLCC

With most of Utah’s move to yellow status (low-risk) as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic, many restrictions are being lifted across the state. As a result, SLCC is also making adjustments to its operations. Starting June 1, SLCC will officially move to yellow status, and throughout the month, the following changes will implemented:   ·       All campus buildings will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 1 to July 31. Evening hours will resume July 31. ·       Employees whose job responsibilities cannot be done remotely will be prioritized in returning to work starting June 8. ·       Department directors are establishing plans to safely and reasonably begin bringing people back to the workplace for on-campus, face-to-face operations at all SLCC locations starting June 8. Check with your supervisor for details. ·       Reasonable precautions will be implemented to keep employees and students safe while at SLCC. This includes frequent cleaning and sanitation o

College Community, 2020 Commencement Important to New SLCCSA President

You know that part in job interviews where candidates say, “I’m a people person” to the interviewer when asked what strengths they bring to the job? Well, that’s actually Emily Hernandez Alzamora – a real people person.   It’s why she ran in and won the Salt Lake Community College Student Association race for president. It’s why she’s still excited about SLCC’s June 26 commencement ceremony, even though it’s online (and she still has a year left at the college). And it’s also why the 19-year-old has had a little tougher time with quarantine and social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.   Emily’s parents and little sister have been “calm as cucumbers” while staying at home together throughout the spring in Murray. “Then you have me – I bother everyone, and I try to hug my sister as much possible. I love her so much,” she says. “I try to be as loud as possible. The list goes on.” When she studies, she “travels” to different places throughout the house and yard. “I love being outd

Two Mask-making Efforts at SLCC with One Community-minded Goal – the Greater Good

SLCC President Deneece G. Huftalin (far left) and cabinet members with dozens of masks produced by the injection molding machine behind them. As the COVID-19 pandemic began sweeping across the U.S. this past spring, employees with different skill sets at Salt Lake Community College started brainstorming how they could use their talents and the school’s resources to make a key component of keeping people safe – masks.   The result – thousands of masks are being delivered to places across Utah where they are needed most, thanks to a small army of employees and volunteers at SLCC’s Westpointe Workforce Training and Education Center and the Fashion Institute at its Library Square Campus.   “As we look forward to opening the campus this summer, we will all need to be mindful of our role in elevating one of our stated values – community,” says SLCC President Deneece G. Huftalin. “As community members, we will be asking employees to wear a mask in public areas where social distancing is not e
