Faculty Development Opportunities for the Week of May 11–15

Teach Anywhere Webinar
The Teach Anywhere webinar will introduce SLCC faculty to the many resources available to help them transition from teaching on campus to teaching remotely.
In this one-hour workshop, you will:
  • Learn how to access eLearning's Teach Anywhere Guide
  • Learn where to get help with Canvas
  • Explore videoconferencing tools that you can use to create a virtual classroom, including WebEx, Microsoft Teams and BigBlueButton, and discuss the pros and cons of each tool 
Specifically, you'll learn how to:
  • Add WebEx to Canvas
  • Schedule a training session in WebEx
  • Start a training session in WebEx
  • Monitor chat and hand raising from participants
  • Create breakout sessions for student groups
  • Add Microsoft Teams to Canvas
  • Schedule a meeting and invite your students to the meeting
The facilitators will leave time at the end of the session to answer questions from participants.

Schedule:
  • Thursday, 5/14: 5–6 p.m.
  • Friday, 5/15: 11 a.m.–12 p.m.
Registration is required. Look for FE36 Teach Anywhere under Faculty Development in SLCC’s training registration system.

Other professional development opportunities are available through eLearning this summer:
  • The Canvas User Credential is a 12-hour, fully online course. It is currently open for registration, and registrants can start begin immediately. The last day to register is 7/8. The course must be completed by 8/8.
  • The Online Teacher Credential is a 12-hour, fully online course that starts on 6/1 and ends on 7/13. The last day to register is 5/27. Faculty must be proficient in Canvas or earn the Canvas User Credential prior to taking the Online Teacher Credential course.
Register for these online courses in your MySLCC platform under the Employee Tab. Look for “Register for Training.” Then look under “Faculty Development.” You will find these courses listed as FE25 and FE26.

The Center for Prior Learning Receives an Honorable Mention

Today, SLCC's Credit for Prior Learning department received an Honorable Mention from the  Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL ) and the  Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education  for its intentional approach and for expanding student options to receive credit for prior learning.  Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)  allows students to obtain college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional academic environment. This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. Board of Higher Ed names Gregory F. Peterson 9th SLCC President

The Utah Board of Higher Education unanimously selected Gregory F. Peterson, Ed.D., as the ninth president of Salt Lake Community College today, following an extensive national search. Peterson will assume the position on July 1, 2024, and succeeds Deneece G. Huftalin, who served as president from 2014-2024.   “I’m humbled by the opportunity to serve as Salt Lake Community College’s next president, and I look forward to reinforcing SLCC’s commitment to providing educational pathways for transfer and workforce that improve the lives of every member of our community,” Peterson said. “SLCC has an amazing future ahead, and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of that journey.”   As part of its delegated duties and responsibilities, the SLCC Board of Trustees named an  11-member committee  in December 2023 to conduct a national search for the next president of SLCC.
