SLCC President Outlines College Plans for Near Future

SLCC President Dr. Deneece G. Huftalin

Can you believe it’s been eight weeks since we adjusted college operations in order to protect the health and safety of our community members? I’m so grateful for all of your efforts to comply with the guidelines issued by the college and by our local government officials. I also appreciate the commitment you have shown to our students and all that you have done to make this experience as positive and successful as possible.

New COVID-19 Guidelines for Utah
We’re pleased that Governor Herbert has issued an Executive Order placing Utah under “moderate risk” protocols (orange status) for COVID-19 beginning today, May 1, 2020. Information regarding the state’s phased guidelines may be found at https://coronavirus-download.utah.gov/Health/Phased%20Health%20Guidelines%20V3.pdf

SLCC Plans for May 2020
The college will begin to implement a soft reopening of several on-campus services starting Monday, May 18. In order to meet this goal, each VP is currently assessing each area to determine where on-campus service and support personnel are needed. This evaluation will determine which functional areas will be opened, how they will be staffed and if there are departmental needs (e.g. installation of plexiglass) that should be fulfilled prior to opening. These reports will be completed early next week, and more information will follow. Your supervisor will reach out to you if you are identified as an employee who should return to campus. Any individual concerns should be discussed with your supervisor in order to develop appropriate accommodations. Additionally, a list of campus facilities that will be opened in mid-May will be added to the COVID-19 webpage as soon as assessments are completed.

For areas of the college that are not identified at this time as an on-campus service related to student and community support, telecommuting will continue through May 31. Emergency pay will also be available through the end of the month. Also during the next 30 days, college VPs will be gathering information regarding events and activities that could be hosted for 20 or fewer participants with adequate social distancing. This information will be used to develop guidelines for hosting future events.

Personal Protective Equipment
For employees who are currently working on campus, there is a limited supply of face masks available through the public safety drive-up window (open weekdays 8:30-4) at the Gunderson Building on the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. On campus employees who have not yet picked up a mask are asked to do so by early next week. Employees will need to provide their S-number in order to receive a mask.

Finally, as a reminder our Facilities Services and Public Safety departments have purchased bulk hand-sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and 500 face-shields for employee/office use. We currently have adequate supplies of hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes, and we expect that face shields and other protective equipment will be arriving soon.

Again, thank you for all you do and for your patience during this uncertain time. I encourage everyone to remain committed to doing what’s necessary to keep our SLCC community healthy and strong. Continue to watch SLCC Today and the COVID-19 webpage for updates as details are finalized and as information becomes available.

The Center for Prior Learning Receives an Honorable Mention

Today, SLCC's Credit for Prior Learning department received an Honorable Mention from the  Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL ) and the  Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education  for its intentional approach and for expanding student options to receive credit for prior learning.  Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)  allows students to obtain college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional academic environment. This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. To be eligible for CPL, students must be working towards a degree, certificate, or apprenticeship. Director of Credit for Prior Learning at SLCC, Andrea Tipton, mentioned fee...
