Promoting Student Success: One Pizza at a Time

Every semester the School of Math, Science and Engineering hosts a “Pizza with the Dean” event to encourage students to learn more about the school, the tutoring they offer, and the academic support resources that are available. This semester's event was held on Feb. 21 in the  STEM Learning Center  in the Science Building (SI) on the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. The center provides drop-in tutoring in subjects like math, chemistry, biology and more. Students can check in at the front desk and then scan a QR code on tables to be connected with a tutor. In addition to tutoring, the center serves as a quiet study space for individuals or groups. Jevahjire France, a student studying mechanical engineering, said he often comes to the center to "find a comfortable spot by the big windows to do homework or study for tests." Being in the space makes it easier for him to focus and stay awake, he says. Attendees at the "Pizza with the Dean" event enjoying their pizzas.

Alumni Spotlight: Demetrius Daniels

Demetrius Daniels was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, at a young age. As a prospective first-generation college student, navigating an entirely new institution was daunting. However, knowing that many of his friends were attending Salt Lake Community College, Demetrius enrolled and started his educational journey.   Demetrius' memories of SLCC are mainly of the Taylorsville campus, in what used to be the Multicultural Center—now known as the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs—where he built a close-knit community while participating in multiple extracurricular activities. The greatest lesson Demetrius learned while attending SLCC was time management. As a student active in numerous clubs, working, and having a full academic schedule, he quickly learned to prioritize what was essential versus what was urgent.    When asked to share advice with his fellow Bruins, Demetrius shares two main things to ensure a successful experience at SLCC

Clark Planetarium Hosts Lecture Series with SLCC Professors

In partnership with Salt Lake Community College, Clark Planetarium is hosting a series of lectures that explore subjects within the field of environmental science. The planetarium will hold these events in the Northrop Grumman IMAX Theatre on the second Thursday of every month, leading up to Earth Day in April. “We at Clark Planetarium really wanted to bring an opportunity to learn science from local scientists and so we decided that we would start with a lecture series about a planet that's very important to us. That is planet Earth,” said Jason Sills, associate division director at Clark Planetarium. The planetarium will host a professor from SLCC each month who will be talking about different aspects of environmental science. The first of four lectures was held on Jan. 11, where Dr. Maura Hahnenberger spoke on the critical need to conserve the Great Salt Lake. Maura, an atmospheric scientist and professor who teaches Meteorology and Earth Sciences at SLCC, discussed the lake
