Gary Payton II knew the path to becoming a professional athlete was a difficult one and that it was going to take grit to reach his dreams. “You just got to promise yourself that you are going to buy in and take the punches as they come and enjoy the journey—and the journey depends on how much work and effort you put into it,” says Gary.  He chose to attend and play basketball at Salt Lake Community College because it was part of a well-respected conference and offered a chance to get recognized. Gary played for SLCC from 2012 to 2014 before moving on to play at Oregon State University. New SLCC Men's Basketball assistant coach Rosbie Mutcherson. Familiarity and comfort are two adjectives that are important in the coaching community. Those words signify a working relationship that is already tangible and effective, meaning little time is spent on building camaraderie and more time is spent on leading student-athletes. It should come as no surprise then the Salt Lake Community College men's basketball program found an experienced coach with ties to new coach  Kyle Taylor  as he announced Friday that the Bruins have hired Rosbie Mutcherson to be an assistant coach. Mutcherson, who played for Taylor when he was a coach with NCAA Division-III Covenant College, has a wide range of coaching experience, including working as an assistant last year with Northwest Florida State. The end of a remarkable coaching era in the state of Utah has come. Betsy Specketer , the longtime head coach of the Salt Lake Community College women's basketball program, announced her retirement as the program's leader on Monday, ending a 25-year tenure at the institution. Specketer compiled a 545-196 overall record in a 23-year run as the head coach of the Bruins. After a 25-6 season in 2018-19 that featured a sixth-consecutive trip to the NJCAA National Tournament, Specketer said she came to the decision that it was time to end the coaching chapter of her life. "I've actually been thinking about it for a little while now," said Specketer. "It's definitely not something that was decided in haste. My experience at SLCC has been nothing but positive but there comes a time when maybe you'd like to do some different things." Salt Lake Community College women’s basketball freshman  Lauren Gustin  was honored Jan. 16 with national honors from the NJCAA, earning the prestigious National Player-of-the-Week award. A late addition to the SLCC roster, Gustin has entered at exactly the right time for veteran coach  Betsy Specketer , helping the Bruins to a 4-1 record since joining the team in late December. The Salem Hills native averaged 31.5 points in victories Jan. 10 and 12 over Colorado Northwestern and Snow College, bringing in 15 rebounds-per-game in the week as well.  Gustin had a high of 40 points and 22 rebounds in a 71-64 overtime victory over Snow College, marking her career highs with Salt Lake. Since joining the team, she has averaged 26 points and 17.6 rebounds in five games.
