SLCC Student COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement – Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is SLCC implementing a vaccine requirement? A. State leaders recently granted Utah System of Higher Education institutions more flexibility in decisions regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements for Spring semester 2022. The surge in cases due to the Delta variant has put a huge strain on Utah’s health care system, and the college can play an important role in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 by requiring students to get vaccinated. Q. Why are SLCC employees not subject to the vaccination requirement? A. The college is currently waiting for a legal review and authority to consider a vaccination requirement for SLCC employees. A recent report highlights the need for Utahns to be better guards against cybercrime. The report, compiled by CCTV Camera World using FBI data, shows cybercrime victims in Utah losing an average of $9,562, making Utah the fifth costliest state for cybercrime on a per-capita basis. Salt Lake Community College Cyber Security Associate Professor Rod Buhler has seven handy tips to guard against cybercrime. Freeze your credit so the bad guys can’t take your money. All communication should start with you! Never trust a communication that starts with somebody else, phone, text, email, front door… because you don’t know who they REALLY are. Keep your phone number(s) private; hackers are tracking you with it, not just by your social security number anymore. Never use your debit card. It’s better to spend someone else’s cash with CREDIT CARD. Then if the account gets hacked, it’s the bank’s money and not your money that they took. NEVER use public Wi-Fi. Tet

President’s Message: COVID-19 Vaccine Update

Hello Bruins!  We hope this message finds you well and that your semester is off to a great start.  As you are aware, state leaders recently granted Utah System of Higher Education institutions more flexibility in decisions regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements for spring semester.  Throughout the pandemic, we have been mindful of the health of our college and our local community and as such, we’ve implemented many precautions related to COVID-19.  Given the increasing number of cases due to the Delta variant, we have made a decision to adopt a vaccination requirement for all SLCC students beginning Spring Semester 2022. We are requiring that students be vaccinated before registering for spring classes.  To support students in meeting this requirement, we are offering several vaccination clinics on campus. Journalism Assistant Professor Receives National Recognition

  Marcie Young Cancio’s former students call her a “role model,” “inspiring” and a “living legacy” in terms of the work she has been doing with journalism students at Salt Lake Community College. For her efforts, Young Cancio recently won a College Media Association Adviser Award under the category Honor Roll Adviser for a two-year newspaper adviser. The honor is awarded to those who have demonstrated “distinguished service” in a particular area while having fewer than five years of experience in college media advising. Young Cancio teaches journalism and digital media at SLCC. More recently, she started Amplify Utah , a nonprofit that works with The Salt Lake Tribune to publish her students’ work. The goal is to spotlight diversity and offer students the opportunity to tell the stories of their communities. College Lands Two National Awards from Campus Pride Index

This Best of the Best ranking comes on the heels of receiving the top spot from Campus Pride Index as the Most Affordable LGBTQ Friendly College in the United States.
