SLCC Film Students Film Scenes Around the World Without Leaving Campus

Utah Higher Education’s First Virtual Production Stage Allows for Real-Time Filmmaking Cameras rolled across a vast stretch of barren desert. The next day, the scene had shifted to a dew-dripping rain forest, and just hours later, a scene played out in the far reaches of outer space. This was all filmed without the filmmakers and actors ever having to leave the new Taylor Virtual Production Stage at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC)—the first one in Utah’s higher education landscape. Students studying film at SLCC’s School of Arts, Communication & Media (SACM) now have access to the same state-of-the-art technology used in movies and television series, such as the new Marvel releases and The Mandalorian. This same technology is also used in creating video games, allowing for photorealistic, real-time renderings of fully fictional characters and environments.     “We are incredibly proud to offer this state-of-the-art technology to our film students—and to be the only fil...

Bridging the Gap: USU and SLCC Create Path for Fashion Students into Outdoor Industry

Brenna Utley grew up making clothes for herself. “My dad taught me how to sew when I was little. I remember I wanted to make a pair of pants, so he helped me figure it out. Then I just kept going creating my own way of making clothes, until school taught me the right way.” Brenna will be one of the first students to take advantage of a new pathway program from the Fashion Institute at Salt Lake Community College to the Outdoor Product Design and Development (OPDD) at Utah State University (USU) . Recently USU and SLCC have joined together in providing this new opportunity for fashion students wanting to explore careers in the growing outdoor product design industry. This collaboration introduces an articulation transfer agreement designed to seamlessly transfer SLCC Technical Apparel fashion and design graduates into USU's OPDD program. “I always wanted to do more outdoorsy types of design, and I think this [USU] degree will give me an edge connecting with industry that has an out...

Whimsical and Unique Designs at 2023 Spring Fashion Show

Models taking the runway at SLCC's Annual Fashion Show In a display of whimsy and color, students from Salt Lake Community College’s Fashion Institute showcased their creativity on the runway at South City Campus on April 22.  With styles inspired by clowns, Ugly Betty and Alice in Wonderland, the annual fashion show was a culmination of months of hard work by SLCC's fashion design students. Each senior design student in the Collection Production class is required to create 10 pieces of clothing as their final project. The class begins in the fall with students finding their inspiration and drawing sketches, to creating and sewing their designs in the spring, and ending with presenting their designs at the fashion show. “It's just really cool to see students and see what they've come up with because they've been working all year since the fall on this,” says Breeann Ross, one of the three Fashion Production students who put on this event. The Fashion Production cl...

Flair, Flounce and One-of-A-Kind Designs at the 2022 SLCC Fashion Show

Growing up, Hope Ainsworth delved into the world of anime and Japanese art and culture, including Japan’s enthrallment with Lolita fashion. This attraction materialized during a bridal design class, in which Ainsworth made an Alice in Wonderland dress. “After that, I was hooked. I said to myself: I just wanted to make puffy dresses for the world,” said Ainsworth, with a big smile. At SLCC’s annual Fashion Institute senior show held on May 2 at South Town Mall, Ainsworth’s signature line of flouncing teacup skirts were modeled along with a wide variety of other original designs curated from collections developed by students in their final year of the program. A full house viewed collections ranging from clubwear, streetwear, office/business wear, ready-to-wear clothes, cosplay and costumes. The half-dozen students involved designed seven to ten pieces each. Alicia Scott designed every-day and office-wear clothing with a focus on simple lines, st...
