This past summer, Salt Lake Community College's Fashion Institute moved from its former location at Library Square to join the School of Arts, Communication and Media (SACM) at South City Campus. To celebrate this transition, the Institute is hosting an open house event on Thursday, October 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature instructor presentations, alumni highlights, refreshments and a prize raffle. President Deneece G. Huftalin will speak at 3:30 p.m..

The event will be held in the Fashion Institute's new location at end of the hallway, just west of the Grand Theatre. Cases lining the hallway display pictures and biographies of many alumni who have “made it big in the industry,” along with a number of alumni creations, including costumes, hats and shoes. One cabinet will showcase a timeline: “75 Years of Fashion.”

“This specific display is ‘75 Years of Fashion’ and is in conjunction with 75 years of the community college. We wanted to create a display that gives an overview of how fashion and culture reflect each other and how it is tied to music and the arts,” Matt Monson explains as his students in the merchandising class work on adding elements to the physical fashion timeline, including colorful swim and active wear, album covers through the ages and historical accessories.

In each classroom along the hall, instructors will share past and present projects that showcase the specific work which is taught in each room. They will answer questions and talk briefly about the subject they teach. Guests will receive trivia cards as they enter the rooms to learn more about the history of fashion and the programs offered at SLCC.

There will be a raffle, refreshments and a guest book to be signed by visitors that will kept in the display cases after the event. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community are all invited to attend.

This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. To be eligible for CPL, students must be working towards a degree, certificate, or apprenticeship. Director of Credit for Prior Learning at SLCC, Andrea Tipton, mentioned fee...
