Assistant Professor Presents at College Media Association Conference

Marcie Young Cancio.

Salt Lake Community College Assistant Professor Marcie Young Cancio presented at the 2022 Spring College Media Association (CMA) Conference on March 9-12. The conference was presented by CMA, an organization that supports student media programs and professionals, and held in New York City.

Young Cancio is an assistant professor in the Communications department, faculty advisor for the student-run newspaper The Globe and founder and executive director of Amplify Utah. 2022 marks Young Cancio’s first year presenting Amplify Utah as a representative of SLCC. Her presentation outlined how other colleges and news media organizations can implement a collaborative program like Amplify Utah, which works with The Salt Lake Tribune and The Globe to publish students’ work.

The collaboration between college and local news media organizations intends to spotlight the diverse perspective of SLCC’s students. The project was incorporated in July 2020 and launched during SLCC’s Fall Semester 2021. Within the first year, students published two dozen stories through The Salt Lake Tribune. Their work also gained visibility through other news media outlets like West View Media and KRCL’s Radioactive program.

While presenting at the CMA Conference, Young Cancio’s main goal was to connect with faculty advisors and newsrooms and, most importantly, highlight students’ accomplishments. “We found a lot of success in doing this, and we would like to see similar success in other colleges across the country,” she says.

Marcie Young Cancio’s work with Amplify Utah exemplifies how SLCC faculty curate engaging, experiential coursework for students. At the same time, the college and surrounding communities benefit from reading stories written by students with varying identities and experiences. “A younger and diverse population of writers provide different perspectives, opening up a world to tell more stories and create opportunities for more equitable news,” she says. “We can and should continue to share the news that is important to people. If those stories are infrequently told, you don’t know what you’re missing.”

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
