Two students have been named as 2022 New Century Scholars. Brandon Loveall as a Transfer Pathway Scholar and Jane Seegmiller as a Workforce Pathway Scholar. The Transfer Pathway Scholarship supports students planning to transfer to a four-year institution and the Workforce Pathway Scholarship supports students entering the workforce upon the completion of a degree or certificate.
As the Transfer Pathway Scholar, Brandon Loveall will receive a $2,250 scholarship and a trip to New York City to be presented the award in the company of President Huftalin at the Phi Theta Kappa Presidents Breakfast held at the annual convention for the American Association of Community Colleges AACC).
“I’m hoping the convention will give me insight into all the different accomplishments other students have done and use that to improve myself,” said Loveall.
Loveall credits SLCC with helping him figure out his passion for the natural sciences. He will graduate from SLCC with an associate degree in chemistry in the Fall of 2022. He plans to continue in the natural sciences at a four year institution after gaining some real world experience.
Workforce Pathway Scholar Jane Seegmiller will receive $1,250. She plans to use the money to continue her education. “This scholarship will give me the peace of mind to take classes,” said Seegmiller. She is on track to graduate with an Associate of Applied Acience degree in Construction Management in December of 2023.
“I chose SLCC because they offer hands-on experience on home building,” said Seegmiller. “SLCC is providing me with the education to be fully equipped in the construction industry.”
Jamie Kelsch who is the New Century Scholarship Nominator and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Advisor at SLCC said, “This year we are honored to have students from Salt Lake Community College chosen in each category. It’s exciting because their achievements reflect well on the college and our amazing faculty. But mostly it’s exciting to see our students excel and set themselves apart.”
New Century Scholarships support students at associate degree granting institutions. Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. Annually, thousands of students are nominated from more than 1,200 college campuses nationwide with one Workforce Scholar and one Transfer Pathway Scholar selected from each state.
“My congratulations go out to Brandon and Jane for their academic accomplishments,” said President Huftalin. “We know that scholarships are vital for making college completion a reality for many of our students and I encourage students to check out what’s available at SLCC.”
Both Loveall and Seegmiller echo those sentiments. “I will encourage every student to take advantage of all the scholarship opportunities SLCC offers,” said Seegmiller. “The worst answer you can get is no.”
The New Century scholarship program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation, the American Association of Community Colleges or AACC and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. The society recognizes the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and is made up of more than 3.8 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in 11 countries.
